- Hue Imperial City (The Citadel) - The citadel was strategically positioned to face the Huong River (Perfume River) towards the southeast. This entire complex served as the center of power until the French protectorate was established in the 1880s. Afterward, it primarily maintained symbolic traditions until the monarchy was abolished in 1945. At its peak, the Purple Forbidden City housed numerous buildings and hundreds of rooms. Once vacated, it suffered from neglect, termite damage, and harsh weather, including several cyclones. Despite these challenges, the Imperial City remained an impressive sight. The most significant damage came from human conflicts, as evidenced by the bullet holes from 20th-century military battles.
Out of 160 buildings, only 10 major sites remain, including the Thái Hòa and Cần Thanh temples, Thế Miếu, and Hiển Lâm Các. The city was designated a UNESCO site in 1993. The remaining structures are undergoing restoration and preservation, so some areas may not be accessible to visitors.
- Thien Mu Pagoda - Thien Mu Pagoda is often regarded as the unofficial symbol of Hue. To visit the Pagoda, visitors can take a local Dragon Boat and cruise up the Perfume River.
Thien Mu is an active Buddhist monastery with origins dating back to 1601. One of its most poignant exhibits is a car belonging to a former monk who, in 1963, drove to Saigon and self-immolated to protest against the South Vietnamese regime’s harsh treatment of Buddhist monks and followers.
- Perfume River - Enjoy a 30-minute boat ride on the Perfume River.
- Tomb of Khai Dinh - The Khai Dinh Tomb is one of seven significant imperial tombs along the Perfume River and surrounding countryside. This tomb is unique due to its blend of Western and Eastern architecture. It was constructed for Khải Định, the twelfth Emperor of the Nguyễn dynasty, from 1920 to 1931, taking 11 years to complete. It is situated on a steep hill outside the capital city of Huế.
- Thuy Tien Lake - The aquarium, featuring a stunning dragon shape, is the main structure of Thuy Tien Lake’s abandoned water park.
The aquarium was once elaborately built but has since become dilapidated, covered in dust and moss.
Inside the dragon, visitors can observe the significant deterioration of the building, with patchy areas, rusted and unused equipment, and rooms filled with dust and debris. Outside, the grass grows wild.
From the dragon’s mouth, one can enjoy a panoramic view of Thien An Hill and Thuy Tien Lake. The serene lake, lush green forest, and clear sky create a delightful and memorable landscape. The aquarium once housed a crocodile farm with three crocodiles (the heaviest weighing 45kg and the lightest 35kg).
When Thuy Tien Park was abandoned, the crocodiles remained in their original location, prompting warnings to be posted for tourists.
