The trail was named after Ho Chi Minh, the leader of North Vietnam. Its construction began in 1959 by Group 559, a logistical unit of the PAVN. The trail played a crucial role during the Vietnam War, enabling North Vietnam to send troops, weapons, and supplies to the Viet Cong in South Vietnam.
The trail comprised thousands of miles of dirt roads, footpaths, and waterways, often relocated or concealed to avoid U.S. bombing raids. Despite heavy bombing by the U.S. to disrupt supply lines, the trail was extremely difficult to destroy due to its complexity and the dense jungle terrain.
