Silver Circle | West Iceland Tour | Lava Cave | Overnight in Reykjavík
Borgarnes - The tour begins with a convenient pickup from your Reykjavik accommodation, followed by a scenic drive past Mount Esja and through a tunnel under Hvalfjordur into West Iceland. We’ll pause in Borgarnes for refreshments and to take in the stunning views across Borgarfjordur.
Deildartunguhver Thermal Spring - Next, we visit Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring, producing over 180 liters of boiling water per second. Walk safely on boardwalks through steam clouds around the bubbling springs or view them from a platform.
Snorralaug - A few minutes away in Reykholt, we visit Snorralaug (Snorri’s Pool), a smaller hot spring where locals have bathed since the 12th century. Mentioned in medieval writings by Snorri Sturluson, this protected archaeological site includes a 19th-century timber church and a medieval smithy cistern visible through a viewing glass.
Hraunfossar - We then visit Hraunfossar, a series of waterfalls formed by rivers running across the Hallmundarhraun lava field. The clear glacial meltwater tumbles into the Hvita river, offering breathtaking views.
Barnafoss - A short walk brings us to Barnafoss, or “the waterfall of the children,” with a tragic story of two children who fell to their deaths from a natural stone bridge, which their grief-stricken mother destroyed to prevent further tragedies.
The Cave Vidgelmir - The tour’s highlight is the Vidgelmir Lava Cave, nearly 1600 meters long, filled with stalactites, stalagmites, ice, lava formations, and multi-colored rocks. This 90-minute expedition, guided by experts, offers a deep dive into the power and scale of volcanic eruptions.
Husafell - We end our tour in the woodland oasis of Husafell, a magical place with birch woodlands, waterfalls, lava fields, springs, and medieval remains. Home to many artists, including sculptor Pall Gudmundsson, Husafell also features the legendary lifting stone used in strength competitions.
South Coast tour + Glacier hike | Overnight in Vik or the surrounding
Seljalandsfoss - Our first stop is the “hidden” waterfall at Gljufrabui, concealed in a cave. Nearby is the 60-meter-high Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which can be walked around, though the path can be slippery. This site has appeared in music videos, TV shows, and films.
Skogafoss - Next, we visit Skogafoss, a 60-meter-high waterfall featured in “Game of Thrones” and other media. Climb the stairs for a high view of the falls. There’s a café and restrooms here for a quick break.
Solheimajokull Glacier - We then head to Solheimajokull Glacier, part of the larger Myrdalsjokull ice sheet. With a qualified guide and safety equipment, you’ll walk across this ancient blue-ice glacier, exploring crevasses, ice tunnels, and other features.
Reynisfjara Beach - Our final stop is the famous black sand beach at Reynisfjara, named a Top Ten non-tropical beach by National Geographic. The dark sands, powerful waves, and sea stacks offer a supernatural photo opportunity. Be cautious of the waves, which can be unexpectedly strong. The cliffs’ hexagonal basalt columns are home to puffins and other seabirds.
Glacier Lagoon + Amphibian boat tour | Overnight in Reykjavik
Diamond Beach Jokulsarlon - The highlight of your South Coast adventure is Diamond Beach, named for the sparkling ice fragments sculpted by wind and waves on the black sand. This location offers fantastic photo opportunities and is perfect for a proposal.
Glacier Lagoon - Nearby is the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, where bright-blue and white icebergs break off from the Breidamerkurjokull glacier and float in the lagoon. Enjoy a 45-minute amphibious boat tour among the icebergs, possibly spotting seals. This bucket-list location offers stunning, ever-changing scenery.
Hofskirkja Church - Hofskirkja, the last church of its type built in Iceland, dates back to the 19th century. Its turf roof and moss-covered burial mounds blend into the landscape. Though not open to the public, it’s a quick photo stop.
Fjadrargljufur Canyon - The Fjadrargljufur River Canyon, featured in a Justin Bieber music video, is a 100-meter-deep, nearly two-kilometer-long green gorge. Formed during a glacial period, it’s now a popular visitor spot. We’ll stay here for an hour.
Vik - The charming village of Vik, the southernmost point in Iceland, offers panoramic views from its pretty church. See the Reynisdrangar and Dyrholaey from another perspective. Vik is unique for being a seaside village without a harbor and is home to many seabirds in the summer.
Golden Circle + Kerid Crater Lake + Blue Lagoon experience | Overnight in Reykjavik
Thingvellir National Park - The day starts with a drive to Thingvellir National Park, where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are separating. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is also culturally significant as the site of the world’s oldest surviving Parliament, established by Vikings in 930 AD. Iceland declared independence from Denmark here in 1944.
Geysir - Next, we visit the world-famous Geysir hot spring, passing through the village of Laugarvatn. Nearby Strokkur reliably erupts up to 30 meters every few minutes. Streams of superheated water and colorful residues surround the area. There’s time for lunch, snacks, or souvenir shopping at the service station.
Gullfoss Waterfall - Gullfoss, a double drop waterfall with a 30-meter cascade, produces endless spray and rainbows on sunny days. This protected site offers several viewing perspectives to experience its thundering power.
Kerid Crater - We also visit the dramatic red earth Kerid volcanic crater, 50 meters deep and 3000 years old. A walk around the crater and lake offers a visual highlight. Bjork once performed a concert here.
Blue Lagoon - The tour continues to the Blue Lagoon, passing through the Reykjanes peninsula with its lava fields, volcanoes, and ocean views. Admission to the Blue Lagoon is included, allowing you to relax in the naturally-heated water and enjoy the facilities. After two hours, we return to Reykjavik.
