Silver Circle | West Iceland Tour | Lava Cave | Overnight in Reykjavík
Borgarnes - The tour begins with a convenient pickup from your Reykjavik accommodation, followed by a scenic drive past Mount Esja and through a tunnel under Hvalfjordur into West Iceland. A brief stop in Borgarnes allows for refreshments and the chance to admire the stunning views across Borgarfjordur.
Deildartunguhver Thermal Spring - Next, we visit Deildartunguhver, renowned as Europe’s most powerful hot spring, producing over 180 liters of boiling water per second. Experience the raw power of nature as you safely walk on boardwalks through steam clouds around the bubbling springs or view them from the platform.
Snorralaug - Snorralaug (Snorri’s Pool) is a smaller hot spring located a few minutes away in Reykholt, where locals have bathed since the 12th century. Mentioned in the medieval writings of Snorri Sturluson, an Icelandic poet and chieftain, this pool is now a protected archaeological site. Capture photos of the beautiful 19th-century timber church here, and peek inside to see a medieval smithy cistern through a viewing glass.
Hraunfossar - We then visit Hraunfossar, a breathtaking series of waterfalls formed by several rivers flowing about 900m across the Hallmundarhraun lava field, created a millennium ago by a volcanic eruption under the Langjokull glacier. Hraunfossar, meaning “Lava Waterfalls,” now features clear glacial meltwater cascading into the Hvita (White) river below, offering one of the country’s most stunning views.
Barnafoss - A short walk through various viewing points leads to Barnafoss, or “the waterfall of the children,” with a tragic story. A natural stone bridge once spanned these powerful falls, but after two children from a nearby farm fell to their deaths while crossing, their grieving mother had the bridge destroyed to prevent further tragedies.
The Cave - The tour’s highlight is a visit to the magnificent Vidgelmir Lava Cave. Spanning nearly 1600 meters, the cave takes you deep into a lava flow, showcasing stunning stalactites, stalagmites, ice and lava formations, and multi-colored rocks. This 90-minute expedition into the country’s most extensive lava caves will amaze you, offering a real sense of the power and scale of volcanic eruptions, guided by knowledgeable experts.
Husafell - The tour concludes in the woodland oasis of Husafell, a magical place to unwind after a day of wonder. With birch woodlands, waterfalls, rugged lava fields, crystal-clear springs, medieval remains, and more, Husafell is a fairytale setting that has inspired many artists. Modern sculptor Pall Gudmundsson creates intriguing faces and rock harps from local stones here. The legendary Husafell Stone, used to test strength in local and international competitions, can also be found here.
South Coast tour + Glacier hike | Overnight in Vik or the surrounding
Seljalandsfoss - The tour’s first spectacular sight is the “hidden” waterfall at Gljufrabui, concealed in a cave and often missed by visitors, but we will guide you to it! Nearby is the 60-meter-high Seljalandsfoss, which cascades off the Eyjafjallajokull volcano into a deep pool. A path allows you to walk around the waterfall, though it can be slippery, so check with our guide first. This location is popular, having appeared in music videos, TV shows, and films.
Skogafoss - Our next stop is Skogafoss, one of the world’s most recognizable waterfalls, featured in “Game of Thrones” and other productions. From a height of 60 meters, the waters create sheets of spray and rainbows on sunny days. You can climb stairs for a higher view of the falls. A café and restrooms are available for snacks or coffee.
Solheimajokull Glacier - After Skogafoss, we head east to Solheimajokull, or “Sun’s Home Glacier,” part of the larger Myrdalsjokull ice sheet in the Katla UNESCO Global Geopark. You’ll have the chance to walk across this ancient blue-ice glacier with a qualified guide and all necessary safety equipment, including ropes, crampons, and helmets, allowing you to appreciate the glacier’s scale and explore its crevasses, ice tunnels, and other features.
Reynisfjara Beach - The final stop on your first day on the South Coast is the famous black sand beach at Reynisfjara, once named by National Geographic as one of the world’s Top Ten non-tropical beaches. The dark volcanic sands are pounded by powerful Atlantic waves, and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks loom offshore, offering a supernatural photo opportunity. Avoid getting too close to the waves, as they can be unexpectedly fast and strong! Hexagonal basalt columns adorn the cliffs, home to puffins and other seabirds in summer. The stone sea arches of Dyrholaey are visible in the distance.
Glacier Lagoon + Amphibian boat tour | Overnight in Reykjavik
Diamond Beach Jokulsarlon - The highlight of your South Coast adventure is Diamond Beach and the Glacier Lagoon at Jokulsarlon. Diamond Beach is named for the countless sparkling ice fragments found here, sculpted into fantastic shapes by wind and waves on the black sand Atlantic beach. These eye-catching ice pieces offer fantastic photo opportunities and are a perfect spot for a proposal.
Glacier Lagoon - Just a short distance from Diamond Beach is the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, one of Iceland’s “crown jewels.” Here, enormous blue and white icebergs break away from the receding Breidamerkurjokull glacier and crash into a growing meltwater lagoon. The icebergs slowly drift towards the Atlantic Ocean, and you can take a thrilling 45-minute amphibious boat tour among them, getting close to these icy giants and possibly spotting a seal or two. Jokulsarlon is an extraordinary, bucket-list location featured in several Hollywood movies, yet it remains peaceful and tranquil. The scenery is stunning and ever-changing as wind and tides move the icebergs. After enjoying the Glacier Lagoon’s magic, it’s time to return to Reykjavik.
Hofskirkja Church - Hofskirkja is the last church of its kind built in Iceland, dating back to the 19th century. Its roof is made of deep turf layers, surrounded by moss-covered burial mounds. Rebuilt in the 1950s, it remains a practicing church, blending into the landscape. Few turf churches survive in Iceland, making this a rare sight. The church is not open to the public, so this will be a quick photo stop.
Fjadrargljufur Canyon - The Fjadrargljufur River Canyon is a breathtaking place, a winding green gorge about 100 meters deep and nearly two kilometers long. Fjadrargljufur gained fame from a Justin Bieber music video and is now popular with visitors worldwide. This extraordinary natural environment is covered in fragile mosses. The canyon formed thousands of years ago during a glacial period, leaving a snaking river as the ice retreated. We will spend an hour at this marvelous location.
Vik - The charming village of Vik is Iceland’s southernmost point. It has a fairytale atmosphere, overlooked by a pretty church offering fantastic panoramic views. We’ll take you to this vantage point, where you can also see the Reynisdrangar and Dyrholaey from another perspective. Vik is unique as an Icelandic seaside village without a harbor. In summer, countless seabirds, including Arctic terns, nest here.
Golden Circle + Kerid Crater Lake + Blue Lagoon experience | Overnight in Reykjavik
Thingvellir National Park - The day begins with a scenic drive from Reykjavik towards Mount Esja and into Iceland’s heartland – Thingvellir National Park, a natural wonder. Here, the American and Eurasian tectonic plates slowly separate, allowing you to stand on two continents simultaneously. Geologically fascinating, Thingvellir is also culturally and historically significant as the site of the world’s oldest surviving Parliament, established by the Vikings in 930 AD. Laws were passed, disputes settled, festivals held, and Iceland was ruled from here for nearly a thousand years. Iceland declared independence from Denmark here in 1944. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its rich cultural history and stunning natural environment.
Geysir - After exploring Thingvellir, travel to the world-famous hot spring, Geysir. Passing through the village of Laugarvatn, located next to a beautiful lake in the geothermally active Haukadalur area, you’ll see locals baking rye bread in the ground using superheated vapor! Known worldwide for its power and beauty, Geysir has become synonymous with this natural phenomenon. Nearby, Strokkur, another hot spring, erupts reliably to heights of up to 30 meters every few minutes. You can get close to Strokkur, but check the wind direction first! Streams of superheated water leave colorful residues. While in the Geysir area, you can buy lunch, snacks, or souvenirs at the service station.
Gullfoss Waterfall - Gullfoss is a double-drop waterfall with a cascade over 30 meters, producing endless spray as over a million gallons of water crash into a narrow canyon each minute. Gullfoss is a natural marvel year-round, with various viewing perspectives depending on your visit time, allowing you to fully experience this magical waterfall’s power. It sets off rainbows on sunny days and is equally stunning when partly frozen in winter. Now a protected site, it was nearly converted into a hydroelectric power plant decades ago.
Kerid Crater - These three attractions complete the classic Golden Circle tour, but to enhance your experience, we also stop at the dramatic red earth Kerid volcanic crater. Three thousand years old and over 50 meters deep, a walk around this crater and lake, with its colorful mix of mossy greens and red earth hues, is a visual highlight. Bjork once performed a concert here.
Blue Lagoon - The tour continues towards Grindavik, leading to the Blue Lagoon, with a beautiful drive through the rugged Reykjanes peninsula, admiring vast lava fields, cone volcanoes, and stunning Atlantic Ocean views before reaching Grindavik. Blue Lagoon (admission included)
Prepare for the most relaxing part of your day! Spend the rest of your day unwinding in the iconic naturally-heated water and enjoying the fantastic facilities at the world-famous Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is extremely popular and often sold out, but our tour includes all admission tickets, so you can look forward to this unique spot as soon as you book. After two hours at the Blue Lagoon, return to Reykjavik’s bright lights, where you can reflect on a fantastic day and enjoy the rest of your night in the capital city.
