Its proximity to the Ring Road and stunning natural features make it one of the country’s most renowned and visited waterfalls. Majestic and picturesque, it is among the most photographed sites in Iceland.
- Volcano Eyjafjallajokull - View of Eyjafjallajokull Glacier / Volcano
- Skógafoss - Skógafoss is a waterfall on the Skógá River in southern Iceland at the cliff marking the former coastline. As the coastline receded (now about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from Skógar), the former sea cliffs remained, running parallel to the coast over hundreds of kilometers, creating a distinct border between the coastal lowlands and the Highlands of Iceland.

Kvernufoss - Kvernufoss waterfall is a stunning 30-meter-high (98 ft) waterfall partially hidden in a gorge in South Iceland, yet very close to the Ring Road. It is located on the east side of the famous Skógafoss waterfall and is often overlooked by travelers.
*Please note that in winter, from November to April, the walking path to Kvernufoss may be impassable due to ice or snow. - Dyrholaey - Dyrhólaey, meaning “door hill island,” was formerly known by seamen as Cape Portland. It is a small promontory on Iceland’s south coast, near the village of Vík. Once an island of volcanic origin, it is also known by the Icelandic word eyja [ˈeiːja], meaning island. The volcano erupted about 100,000 years ago during the Pleistocene. The peninsula rises to 120 meters (390 ft), and the Dyrhólaey Lighthouse, built in 1927, stands at the top facing the sea.
- Reynisfjara Beach - Reynisfjara is a world-renowned black-sand beach on Iceland’s South Coast, adjacent to Vik í Myrdal, the southernmost village on Iceland’s mainland.
Visits to this beach are included in many South Coast Tours, and nearly all Road Trips in Iceland will take you there.
From Reynisfjara, you can see Reynisdrangar, impressive rock formations near the shore of Reynisfjara beach by the coastal village Vík on Iceland’s South Coast.
- Fjaðrárgljúfur - Fjaðrárgljúfur is a stunning, dramatic canyon in South Iceland, close to the historic town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
The beauty and seclusion of Fjaðrárgljúfur make it a dream destination for photographers and hikers alike.
*Please note that the road to Fjarðárgljúfur may be closed or in other conditions in winter due to snow from November to April.
- Skaftafell National Park - Skaftafell, in the county of Öræfi, was one of Iceland’s most isolated areas until the early 70s when the last glacial river at the sands of Skeiðarársandur was bridged to complete Iceland’s Ring Road. It is known as one of Iceland’s most beautiful places, with a magnificent contrast of white glaciers, black sands, and green meadows. Skaftafell is one of the crown jewels of Vatnajökull National Park and offers visitors a variety of hiking trails. It is a perfect place to experience the diverse natural wonders the national park has to offer. Skaftafell is a must-see for all visitors to the Vatnajökull Region.
- Diamond Beach Jokulsarlon - The actual name of Diamond Beach is Breiðamerkursandur, which translates to “Broad Plain Sand.” Its jewel-like nickname comes from the ice chunks that adorn the beach year-round.
Icebergs from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier break away and float through the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon before heading out to sea. Some ice blocks get stranded on the beach, creating the illusion of large diamonds.
The phenomenon is striking due to the ice’s bright color against the beach’s dark sand.
