Prachin Shri Shani Dev Ji Mandir - The journey begins at the Shani Mandir, a 283-year-old temple dedicated to the Saturn God. Adjacent to the temple, there is a shop offering delicious Aloo wala Kulchas, a renowned Punjabi bread filled with potatoes and cheese. This Kulcha is often paired with Lassi, a yogurt drink that has become synonymous with Punjab worldwide. Continuing onward, the walk takes you through quaint old streets, where sweet shops display confections in delightful shapes and colors.
From here, the path leads to the tea market. When the British arrived in Punjab, they initially started as tea merchants before gradually expanding their influence. Numerous shops here offer black, green, Darjeeling, and Assam tea. -
Bazar Maai Sewa Wala - Stop At: Saddle market (Bazaar Kathian)
In the past, this market was known for crafting horse saddles. Although no longer a prominent profession, the market still caters to horse owners who cherish this cultural tradition. A few steps further, you enter the vessel market, the largest in the city, with hundreds of shops selling vessels and utensils made from steel, iron, copper, brass, aluminum, silver, and more. Traditional utensils are prominently featured here.
Choora – The wedding bangle. Traditionally, every newlywed bride wears it for 40 days. Various Chooras, from ivory to white gold, are available, and future brides can be seen selecting their desired pieces with their families.
A meal here is considered incomplete without a Papad – thin crisps made from lentil flour and sun-dried, available in various flavors. The market’s aroma is a delightful experience. The walk continues through a street renowned for its sweetmeats and flavored syrups. Boiled fruits preserved in sugar syrup create sweetmeats, while rose, sandal, almond, orange, lemon, and other flavored syrups are also available.
From here, the path leads to an old bakery, where the welcoming elderly couple running it adds to the charm. Next, the Herb market offers a variety of herbs for Ayurvedic and other uses, with shops stocked with sandalwood, basil, parsley, jasmine, mint, and many essential herbs and oils.
Feeling overwhelmed by the strong aroma of spices? That’s right! The spice market is next, offering chilies, cloves, cumin, cinnamon, dried coriander, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, and many more spices essential to Indian cuisine.
The walk concludes at the Galiara, the encircling park of the magnificent Golden Temple.
