Our journey begins from the road where we exit our car and begin our ascent through the pine woods, which gradually transitions into a birch woodland and eventually a sweeping plateau. The ascension is mild on the plateau, the walking terrain is soft peat with an underbelly of stones and an embellishment of crowberry, mountain bearberry, and heather as primary vegetation. The view from the peak of the fjell offers sights of the Ivalo River valley in the south and the extensive pine forests in the west and north.
Along our journey, we observe the signs of reindeer husbandry and might even encounter grazing reindeer in the valleys if fortune shines upon us. We could also spot a variety of birds like the willow grouses, Siberian jays, whimbrels, and golden plovers. During our break atop the fjell, we might behold the sight of a rough-legged buzzard scouting for its day’s sustenance.
Our pace is leisurely as we take in the serenity and vast vistas surrounding us, experiencing nature in its most authentic form.

Hammastunturi Wilderness Area, or Hammastunturin erämaa in Finnish (meaning “tooth fell”), is among the most isolated and least frequented wilderness regions in Western Europe. The protected area’s heart composed of Kehäpää, Hammastunturi, and Appistunturi Fells, stands tall as the highest peaks reaching 500 meters. The northern boundary of spruce growth permeates the wilderness area, with the spruce forests in the southern part giving way to pine forests in the north.
