Highlights

Cusco – Km 82 – Hatunchaca - Patallacta – Ayapata

Ollantaytambo - Our AB team will pick you up from your hotel in the city of Cusco at 4:30 a.m. for your 4-day Inca Trail, After breakfast in Ollantaytambo, we will head to km 82 (Piscakucho) to begin our adventure to Machu Picchu, where you will meet our expert team and pass through the checkpoint. The trek begins with a 3-hour hike to the Llactapata ruins, followed by a one-hour drive to Hatunchaca camp for a delicious lunch. Then, we will hike for 4 hours to Ayapata, our first campsite, where your tents will be set up and hot tea will be served upon arrival around 5:00 p.m.

Ayapata – Dead Woman’s Pass - Runkuraqay – Chaquicocha

Wayllabamba - Early morning, you’ll be awakened with either hot tea or coca tea to start the most challenging day of the 4-day trek to Machu Picchu. We’ll embark on a roughly 4-hour hike to Dead Woman’s Pass (4215m / 13829ft), the highest point of the Inca Trail Trek, where breathtaking landscapes await, and our guide will perform offerings to the local Gods. Following this, we’ll descend to Pacaymayu Valley for a 2-hour journey, indulging in a delectable lunch prepared by our chef. Continuing our trek, we’ll hike for another 1.5 hours to the second pass, Runqurakay (4000m / 13123ft), exploring the Inca site of the same name along the way, before descending to Sayacmarca ruins. Pressing forward, we’ll reach our second campsite, Chaquicocha (3600m / 11811ft), where you can relish a stunning sunset over the Vilcabamba mountain range and marvel at the Milky Way before dinner.

Chaquicocha – Intipata – Wiñaywayna

Winay Wayna - Today offers a more leisurely pace with just 5 hours of hiking to reach the final campsite. Beginning with a gentle Peruvian flat terrain for approximately 2 hours, the trek then descends to the campsite, showcasing diverse ecosystems and offering panoramic views of the Salkantay glacier, the second-highest peak in the Cusco region. Along the way, we’ll explore two Inca ruins, Phuyupatamarka, and Intipata, with our guide providing insights into each site. Upon reaching Intipata ruins, the last campsite becomes visible, and after a brief explanation from our guide, we’ll arrive at the campsite around 12:30 p.m. Following lunch, guests can shower and relax with a siesta until around 4 p.m., when we’ll embark on a short hike to explore the Inca ruins of Wiñaywayna, allowing for free time for photography. Returning to the campsite, we’ll bid farewell to our dedicated porters and enjoy dinner before retiring early to prepare for the following day’s adventures.

Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes - Cusco

Machu Picchu - Today, the eagerly awaited culmination of our journey arrives as we rise early to embark on the final stretch of the Inca Trail, passing the checkpoint at 5:30 a.m. Following this, a 1-hour and 20-minute hike brings us to the Sun Gate, offering breathtaking views of the sunrise over Machu Picchu. Descending for 45 minutes, we reach the Mapi checkpoint around 8:00 a.m. Our experienced tour guide then leads a 2-hour exploration of the citadel before boarding a tourist bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch. Departing on the train at either 14:55 or 15:20 p.m., our AB team awaits at the station to accompany you back to your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley, with an expected return around 7:00 p.m. For those trekking Huayna Picchu Mountain, arrangements for lunch and duffle bag pickup are made with our guide before taking the train.

10000/10 best thing you’ll ever do - This was by far the most incredible experience of our South American trip! We completed the 4 day/ 3 night Inca Trail with AB expeditions and it exceeded our expectations by far. Our tour guide Aiben was so compassionate, knowledgeable and considerate when catering to all our needs and abilities. He was so friendly and open from the beginning, making it easy to form a strong bond with the group! Our chef, Sergio, provided a wide range of the tastiest food we’ve ever had! Everything was presented beautifully and so rich in flavour. Our porters were kind and encouraging and always greeted us with big smiles! The whole team from AB made our experience better then we could have ever imagined. We can’t thank our team from AB enough and are missing them already!

Fantastic experience - Inca Trail 5D/4N - After researching different companies to book the Inca Trail with, I chose AB Expeditions based on the fact that they’re 100% locally owned, their contribution to social projects, their promise of looking after the super porters and the fact that they have small group sizes - ours was a group of 5. I booked the 5 day / 4 night trail which I 100 % recommend - no waking up at 3am and you get to see Machu Picchu twice! The communication with AB was excellent. The minibus transfers, pick up / drop off, train booking etc all went smoothly. The amazing porters appeared to have appropriate gear in terms of clothing & footwear (this was not the case with some other companies that I saw on the trek). The food cooked by wonderful chef Charlie was tasty and plentiful. Guide Jacob was polite, friendly, easy to talk to, considerate, knowledgeable, fun, calm and speaks excellent English. I would not hesitate to book with AB Expeditions again!

Inca Trail 4 Days - We had the best 4 day trip on the Inca Trail. Bernie was our guide. He exceeded our expectations and made us feel like family. AB Expeditions team went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. The food was some of the best food we have ever had. Our group was very small and personable. We seen several of the other groups that were very large. I would 10 out of 10 recommend booking with AB Expeditions. Everything was perfect!

4 day Inca Trail was trip of a lifetime - Hard to imagine a better hiking trip, in a more beautiful place. Our guide, Bernie, became an instant friend and his knowledge was invaluable. Chef Nick, and the rest of the team spared nothing in making us feel comfortable and welcome. They all worked incredibly hard to give us this opportunity to experience their beautiful country and learn their culture.

Well supported intimate experience. - AB Expeditions provided a fantastic service. Our group was small (6) in comparison to other companies on the trail, which made for a more intimate experience. You need to be relatively walking fit as there are long climbs at (4000m) heights where altitude sickness is present. Stops are frequent to take in the history and wonderful sights. Lead by our guide Geovani and head porter Mario with amazing meals provided by Nicanor. We tried to learn all the porters names, so here’s a mention of them for their great effort carrying a lot of our gear and their joyful humour. Fulfilling experience - The classic 4 days Inca Trail was challenging, but at the same time a wonderful experience thanks to all the professionals from AB Expeditions that worked very hard to make sure we had a great time. The porters commanded by Luis carried all the stuff on their backs, while William the chef managed to cook the most delightful meals. For last but not least, Aiben, our guide, made a great job answering patiently all our questions and taking care of the group. His explanations and lessons about the Incas were very insightful. It was a very well organized trip from the beginning to the end. Definitely the highlight of my 2 weeks trip in Peru. Additionally, we were a small group (6 people) comparing to other expeditions, and one of the reasons to pick this company over the others.
