Seoul ➜ Mt. Seoraksan, spellbinding landscape vistas of Mt. Seoraksan national parks.
Seoraksan National Park - With its highest point, Daecheongbong Peak, standing at 1,708 meters above sea level, Seoraksan Mountain is one of Korea’s most stunning mountains. It showcases a variety of colorful flowers in spring, clear water streams in summer, vibrant autumn foliage in fall, and a picturesque snow-covered landscape in winter. The mountain’s colors change with each season, ensuring a beautiful view year-round.
Hangyeryeong and Misiryryeong serve as boundaries dividing Oeseorak (Outer Seorak), located towards the East Sea, and Naeseorak (Inner Seorak). Oeseorak is home to large waterfalls like Biryong Falls, Oryeon Falls, and Towangseong Falls, as well as notable rock formations such as Ulsanbawi Rock and Geumgang Cave. Seorak-dong is a busy area within the park, offering convenient facilities. Popular hiking routes include the Biseondae-Madeungryeong course and the Biseondae-Cheonbuldong-Daecheonbong Peak course.
Gwongeumseong Fortress - We will take a cable car to reach Gwongeumseong Castle. This fortress, also known as Mt. Onggeumsan Castle or Toto Castle, is located on the steep Dolsan Mountain in the Seoraksan Sogongwon area. It is believed to have been built by King Gojong, the 23rd King of the Goryeo Period (918-1392). Legend has it that two generals, Gwon and Kim, built the castle to avoid war.
A path to Gwongeumseong Castle starts at the left side of Sogongwon, past the Biryonggyo Bridge over the ravine. The path is steep and rocky, taking over an hour to travel (2.5 km), so a cable car is used. Installed by Dr. Gi-Sup Lee in 1971, the cable car is still popular among tourists. It operates from 7 a.m. to 6 or 6:30 p.m., departing every 7 minutes. Round-trip tickets can only be purchased at the ticket counter on the day of use.
Seoraksan Sinheungsa Temple - Sinheungsa (신흥사) is a short 10-minute walk from the entrance to Sogongwon. Many visit due to its proximity to Sogongwon. Originally called Hyangseongsa, the temple was built by Jajangyulsa (590-658) during Queen Jindeok’s reign (?~654). It has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times.
On the path to Sinheungsa, there is a large bronze statue called the Bronze Jwabul Statue, which is over 10 meters high. Beyond the statue, on a granite terrace, is a bridge called Hyeonsugyo, newly built for crossing the ravine. Past the bridge, there is a long stone wall with a Cheongwang door, leading to the temple. At the entrance, there are four Cheonwang (king) statues: Jiguk Cheonwang with a sword, Damun Cheonwang with a lute, Gwangmok Cheonwang with a tower, and Jeungjang Cheonwang with a dragon. The Buddhist statues at Sinheungsa, including Mireukbosal, Gwaneumbosal, and Seji, were sculpted by Uisang Daesa. Buildings from the temple’s founding days, such as the sanctuary, main temple, Myeongbujeon, Bojaeru, and Chilseonggak, still stand. An important cultural property, Treasure No. 443, called Hyangseongsaji, is a three-story stone tower.
You can reach the Ulsan boulder by following the wall outside Sinheungsa. The temple is historically significant and attracts many tourists due to its beautiful scenery.
Central Buddhist Museum - This museum features a statue over 10 meters high. Beyond the statue, on a granite terrace, is a bridge called Hyeonsugyo, newly built for crossing the ravine.
Seoraksan ➜ Suwon - Seoul, Fashion and technology forward but also deeply traditional.
Korean Folk Village - Located in Yongin city, this village allows visitors to see how people lived during the Joseon era. The village features reproduced farmhouses, commoner’s houses, government offices, schools, marketplaces, and noble’s houses (Yangban), making it a great place to learn about Korean history.
Dongdaemun Market - Dongdaemun Market is a large commercial district with traditional markets and shopping centers around Dongdaemun Gate, a prominent Korean landmark. It is Korea’s largest wholesale and retail shopping district, featuring 26 shopping malls, 30,000 specialty shops, and 50,000 manufacturers. The market offers a wide range of goods, including silks, fabrics, clothes, shoes, accessories, electronics, leather goods, sporting goods, office supplies, pet products, and toys.
Although traditionally famous for its night market, Dongdaemun Market attracts shoppers and tourists at all times of the day. Unlike Namdaemun Market, it is open 24 hours a day. The market’s appeal lies in its ability to offer everything you need at reasonable prices, in one convenient location, at any time. Major wholesalers and retailers are present, along with specialist outlets focusing on the youth market, making Dongdaemun Market the best place to find the latest fashions at bargain prices. Dongdaemun’s famous food alley, Mukja Golmok, is also a must-visit for those interested in the latest trends in Korean cuisine.
