The term ‘Chadar’ in Hindi translates to ‘a blanket’. The Zanskar River freezes over in the intense winter, creating the image of a giant ice blanket, giving the trek its name. Heavy snowfall restricts access to certain isolated villages, leaving the Chadar Trek as their only connection to the outside world.
Throughout your journey, towering canyons flank both sides of the path. The canyon walls often become a necessary support for traversing the swift, icy river. The trail is heavily snow-covered and at the end of the day, stay overnight in tents pitched on the iced surface or inside historic caves.
