According to local residents, all Penglipuran inhabitants originally came from Bayung Gde Village.
- Kehen Temple - Pura Kehen Temple is located in Bangli Regency, about 40km from Denpasar. It is also known as Pura Hyang Api, as “Kehen” means fire. The temple was constructed between 882 - 914 A.C. by Sridhanandhiraja and was historically used for royal officials to take oaths.
- Besakih Temple - Pura Besakih Temple is the largest and most significant temple complex for the Balinese people, located on the slopes of Agung Volcano, about 50km from Denpasar. It was established in 800 A.C. by the Indian priest Rsi Markandeya, who, upon meditating, sensed a powerful energy emanating from Agung Volcano. He then built a small temple called Basukihan, which is now famously known as Besakih Temple. This temple is dedicated to the God Shiva, revered as the Supreme God in Bali.
