Highlights
  • Gunung Penanjakan - A Jeep will pick you up at your accommodation in Malang between 00:00 and 00:30. In 2 to 3 hours you will arrive at mount Penanjakan.

As it is between 0 and 10 °C a local warm snack with hot coffee or tea are waiting for you.

When the sun is about to rise, you can choose your spot. From your early morning drink till the viewpoint is only a 100m-walk. Weather conditions and the activity of the volcano will determine your morning views, but views over this moonlike landscape are always spectacular when the sun is rising.

  • Sand Sea - After sunrise - around 06:00 - the volcanic black Sand Sea is next. This Sea of Sand partly surrounds mount Bromo and is coloured greyish-black. Many small rivers cross this Sand Sea. You can have your breakfast just somewhere in this Sea and enjoy your stunning surroundings, before continuing to the parking area near Poten Luhur temple.
  • Luhur Poten Temple - Luhur Poten temple is a Hindu temple located within the Sea of Sand that surrounds mount Bromo. This temple is still actively in use. When ceremonies are held, you are free to watch. Otherwise the temple is closed, but certainly it is a stunning sight in the Sea of Sand.

The Jeep will park near this temple, to start your hike to the crater rim of the active volcano Bromo.

  • Mount Bromo - It then is a 45 minutes walk to the top of mount Bromo.

If you don’t feel like walking, you can rent a horse.

Don’t forget to stop walking every now and then. Look over your shoulders as the views keep on changing.

Mount Bromo is an active volcano in an ancient caldera with a width of 10 km. The greyish Sea of Sand and the savanna - bottle green during the raining season - are surrounding Bromo.

  • Tengger Caldera - Once back at the car, you continue to the savanna just behind mount Bromo, also called the Tengger Caldera. According to the story, the savanna used to be a large crater lake. It dried up and formed an array of various rocky and sandy textures. The savanna is now vast flat land with bushes and some hills, among which one can find the Teletubbies hills. Depending on the season, the savanna is a very green savanna or a goldish field.
  • Coban Pelangi Waterfall - On your way back to Malang, you can visit Pelangi waterfall. After the savanna it is a short drive to reach the parking area of the waterfall. Then it is a 30 min hike down hill.

Pelangi means rainbow. When the sun is shining once can see a rainbow over the waterfall.

  • Candi Jago - Jago temple is small and constructed between 1275 and 1300. It is believed to be the burial place of King Wisnuwardhana, the fourth king of the Singosari kingdom.

From Pelangi waterfall to Jago temple takes about 30 min.

Your returning time in Malang depends on the time you spend at the several objects on your way back to Malang. We don’t have a time schedule, the amount of time you spend on the objects is yours to choose. On average travelers are back in Malang around 12:00 noon.

Additional Information

The active volcano Bromo sits in a moonlike landscape of mythical proportions and glorious charm. The volcano and its surroundings offer splendid sights. It stands in a gray-grayish ashen volcanic Sand Sea, surrounded by the towering cliffs of the crater’s edge. It forms a lunar-like landscape. While the savanna - bottle green during the raining season and goldish at the top of the dry season - borders Bromo to the south.

Mt. Bromo - 2392 m tall - is one of three volcanoes in an ancient caldera, that stretches 10 km across. Only Mt. Bromo’s cone is active. Mt. Semeru is Java’s highest peak - 3676 m - and blossoms behind Mt. Bromo when standing at the viewpoint Penanjakan north of Mt. Bromo. Semeru is also an active volcano and throws its ashes every 20 minutes. When Bromo’s crater is smoking as well, the views are just sublime.

Amazing experience! - The tour was perfectly organized and our guide, Tata, is very friendly and accommodating 😊 She accommodated all of our needs during the trip and we had awesome conversations along with the other tour participants as well. Though the jeep ride to the viewpoint was rough because of the volcanic terrain and it was smelling gasoline most of the time, the magnificent view of Bromo gradually revealing itself as the sun rose outweighed all of these things. Thank you Tata and Smartine Tours for making this unforgettable experience possible!

The trip is was great with an experience driver and as promise you will get to see sun rise, waterfall, nice volcano climb. It is advisable to use a horse ride to it As the weather swing from 4degree to 30degree from morning to afternoon. Do prepare and get the right clothing for it.

Beautiful sunrise - We were picked up at midnight from Malang and made our way to the sunrise viewpoint. We arrived early, so that we could park close to the place (it got crazy busy later). Since it was early, we were able to take a quick nap and then went to eat some banana fritters and a hot drink, next to a little fire, which was super nice, because it was chilly. Then, the driver gave us instructions on how to find the best spot for the sunrise and we just had to wait for it. the spot was great and the sunrise was beautiful (the sky was super clear, so we could see all the mountains and there was an amazing sea of clouds underneath). After the sunrise, we got back to the jeep, that was parked in a perfect spot to make a quick exit and we continued down to go hike up Mt Bromo to the caldera. After that, we drove through the sea of sand and started heading back. We also made a stop at a waterfall that was very pretty. There was 1 more waterfall to visit, but it included more hiking, whereas and the other one could be seen from a short walk from the car park through a beautiful path in nature (there was also the option to walk for 30-45 min in the heat to get down there, but we just took pictures from above, which was great).

Very professional agency - We booked through them a day trip to Bromo (sunset tour) and a transfer from Malang to Probolinggo visiting temples and Madarakipura waterfalls on the way. In both cases we had good and comfortable cars, driver/ guide was very kind, and we had memorable experience. Highly recommended

Great Day - Well worth doing while you are in Malang. Our driver was excellent and did an excellent job driving and showing us around. It is cold at sunrise so bring a jacket and maybe a hat. First time I have been cold in Indonesia. The breakfast was very good - buffet style.
