- The Sambisari Temple - This underground Hindu temple was constructed in the 9th century by King Rakai Grung.
- Candi Banyunibo - A Buddhist temple built in the 9th century during the ancient Mataram kingdom era. Rediscovered in 1940, it was found collapsed and buried underground.
- Ijo Temple - A Hindu temple from the 9th century, located on a hill, making it the highest temple in Yogyakarta. It offers beautiful scenery and a view of Yogyakarta city.
- Barong Temple - Believed to have been built around the 9th and 10th centuries AD, this temple is a relic of the Medang Kingdom from the Mataram period. Rediscovered in the early 20th century in a collapsed state during the expansion of a sugar cane plantation by a Dutchman. The name ‘Barong’ was given by locals due to the barongan-like ornaments, a mystical creature in Javanese mythology, found in the temple’s recesses.
- Sojiwan Temple - A Buddhist temple constructed between 842-850 AD. It features around 20 reliefs at its base, depicting Buddhist moral teachings that remain relevant today.
- Plaosan Temple - A unique combination of Hindu and Buddhist temples in one location, symbolizing harmony and tolerance from long ago. It also has connections between Prambanan and Buddhist temples.

Strong recommendation for the “hidden gems” tour - This was a great all-day tour exploring many different temples in the general vicinity of Prambanan. Each temple seemed bigger, grander, or otherwise more impressive than the last. We had several of them all to ourselves. At our request, the company customized the tour to add a stop at Prambanan itself. Our guide, Bagus, was very friendly and knowledgeable and adapted well to our preferences. We were taken to a very nice restaurant for lunch (an extra expense) and an interesting coffee bar after the last temple visit (another extra expense). We were also connected with a knowledgeable and entertaining guide at Prambanan, which did not allow outside guides. Overall, we would highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to see more temples than just the “big one” of Prambanan—which was, indeed, magnificent.
