From Surf to Safari: A Day of Discovery in Sri Lanka
When the waves take a backseat, the allure of Sri Lanka’s coastline beckons. Join me as I trade my surfboard for a day of exploration, discovering the serene beauty of Bentota’s river, the gentle giants of Induruwa, and the historical charm of Galle Fort.
A Laid-Back Start to the Day
The sun was just beginning to rise as I found myself in the heart of Colombo, ready to embark on a day filled with adventure and discovery. The promise of a boat safari, turtles, and moonstone mines was enough to lure me away from the waves for a day. As a professional surfer, my life is usually dictated by the tides and the swell, but today, I was ready to explore the treasures of Sri Lanka’s coastline.
Our first stop was the Bentota River, where a boat safari awaited. The river was a serene escape, with lush greenery lining its banks and the gentle hum of nature all around. As we glided through the water, I couldn’t help but compare the calm of the river to the thrill of riding a perfect wave. The guide pointed out various wildlife, and I was particularly taken by the vibrant birdlife that seemed to dance around us. It was a peaceful start to the day, a reminder of the beauty that lies beyond the surf.
Turtle Encounters and Coastal Wonders
Next, we made our way to the Induruwa Sea Turtle Conservation Project. As someone who spends a lot of time in the ocean, the plight of sea turtles is something close to my heart. The conservation project was an eye-opener, showcasing the efforts being made to protect these gentle creatures. I had the chance to see turtles at various stages of their life cycle, from tiny hatchlings to majestic adults. It was a humbling experience, one that made me appreciate the delicate balance of marine life.
After the turtles, we headed to Ahungalla Beach. The beach was a stretch of golden sand, kissed by the gentle waves of the Indian Ocean. It was tempting to grab a board and hit the surf, but today was about soaking in the sights and sounds of Sri Lanka. The beach was a perfect spot to relax and reflect on the morning’s adventures, with the sound of the ocean providing a soothing backdrop.
Gems and History in Galle
Our final destination was the Moonstone Mines and Gem Palace. The allure of moonstones, with their ethereal glow, was hard to resist. Watching the miners at work, I was reminded of the dedication and skill required to unearth these treasures. The Gem Palace was a treasure trove of sparkling stones, each with its own story to tell.
The day concluded with a visit to the Galle Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking through the fort’s cobbled streets, I was transported back in time. The fort’s history was palpable, with its colonial architecture and ancient ramparts standing as a testament to the past. It was a fitting end to a day of exploration, a reminder of the rich tapestry of culture and history that Sri Lanka has to offer.
As the sun set over the fort, I found myself reflecting on the day’s journey. It was a departure from my usual surf-centric adventures, but one that left me with a deeper appreciation for the natural and cultural wonders of this beautiful island. If you’re ever in Sri Lanka, I highly recommend taking a break from the waves to experience the Galle and Bentota Day Tour. It’s a day well spent, filled with memories that will linger long after the sun has set.
