- Madu Ganga Biodiversity Area - On your way to Galle, enjoy a 1.5-hour boat trip on the Madhu River, which features 64 islands. Experience the beauty of these islands during the boat safari, which includes sights of mangroves, water monitors, monkeys, crocodiles, cormorants, Cinnamon Island, fish massages, a Buddhist temple on an island, and more.
- Moonstone Mines and Gem Palace - Next, visit Sri Lanka’s only natural moonstone mine. Observe the moonstone mines and factory. Moonstone, a sodium potassium aluminum silicate of the feldspar group, displays a pearly and opalescent sheen. It is also known as hecatolite.
- Tsunami Photo Museum - December 26, 2004, was a tragic day for Sri Lanka due to the tsunami that struck the southern province. This museum houses photos of the disaster, which you can view while traveling to Galle. Warning: If you are easily scared or traumatized, you may want to avoid this museum. Nearby, you can also visit the Tsunami Memorial.
- Tsunami Honganji Vihara - Located on the coast north of Hikkaduwa, this statue of a standing Buddha faces the waves with hands in the abhaya mudra (a pose symbolizing fearlessness and protection). The statue is a replica of Afghanistan’s Bamiyan Buddha, destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.
- Galle Fort - After lunch, visit the ancient Galle Fort, built by the Portuguese in 1588 when Sri Lanka was a Portuguese colony. The fort is home to many historical artifacts and is a prominent landmark in Galle city. You can also see the clock tower, bastions, Galle Natural Harbour, lighthouse, Dutch Church, and more.
