Positioned seven miles off the shoreline of Galway, Inishbofin (which means Island of the White Cow) has transformed into a sanctuary for tourism, agriculture and fishing. With a size of 5.7km by 4km, bicycles are the most preferred way to get around the island.
Inishbofin is adorned with various biking trails that offer breathtaking views of the island’s robust Atlantic landscapes. Scattered with shells, the island’s numerous award-winning safe sandy beaches also feature crystal-clear waters that make activities like swimming, snorkelling, and diving an absolute pleasure. The island is recognised and preserved as a special area for conservation and also for protection.
In addition to this, Inishbofin prides itself on being a significant hub for traditional Irish music and songs with its unique Ceilí band. It is believed that the first residents of Inishbofin arrived between 8000-4000 B.C. Upon entering the harbour, you’ll notice a 16th-century barracks built by Cromwell, which served as a jail for catholic priests who were declared guilty of high treason under the English Statute of 1585.
