This full-day trip takes us through Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, the stunning Glenmoriston, and onward to historic Kintail, the site of a Jacobite battle. Passing the Five Sisters Peaks and descending into Lochalsh, we soon find ourselves “over the sea to Skye,” stopping for a photo of Eilean Donan Castle and Loch Duich.
Eilein a Cheò (Skye) is a microcosm of all things Highland and Scottish. This beautiful stretch of land, over 50 miles long but only a few miles wide, is home to the modern and ancestral residences of two great Scottish Clans: The MacDonalds at Armadale and the MacLeods of Dunvegan.
This is also the site where a British Naval frigate with over 400 marines was sent to quell resistance by crofters. The marines stayed on the Island for about six months following the Battle of the Braes near Portree, where during the Highland Clearances, 50 police officers sent from Glasgow to evict residents were driven off, mainly by the women.
Unique in political history, this Island and the neighboring Western seaboard sent 4 members of parliament to Westminster in 1885. They had no party affiliation other than being from the crofting community. Their collective spirit secured the protection of the Crofting Land Act in 1886.
Some of the world’s oldest mountains, the Black Cuillins, are here, formed by violent volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. The lochs are a result of melting glacial ice from the Ice Age.
“Talisker,” the Island’s renowned Malt Whisky, is distilled at Carbost.
We take a different route home over the Auchtertyre Brae, offering panoramic views into Strathcarron, then down into Achnasheen, Garve, and across the Kessock Bridge.
