This stunning region of the Highlands offers a variety of breathtaking views at every turn. Majestic mirrored mountains, heather-covered hills, tree-lined lochs, and abundant wildlife are all found here.
Dave Goulder, a songwriter from England who has settled in the Scottish Highlands, captures the essence of the area in his song:
“And, if I had a hundred homes,
and could stay in each a while,
I’d build them all along the coast
from Sandwood down to Kyle.”
A day’s journey can include Achnasheen, Lochcarron, and Applecross, which has a long history with Saint Maelrubha, who established a monastery there. Maelrubha later resided on one of Loch Maree’s islands, giving the loch its name. The mountain road to Applecross, the Bealach Nam Bo (Pass of the Cattle), ascends a thousand feet in just a mile and a half, not for the faint-hearted!
Continuing through the charming villages of Shieldaig and Torridon to Kinlochewe, visitors are treated to spectacular views of Loch Maree. Ben Eighe and Torridon are designated as a Nature Reserve. Traveling through Gairloch and Aultbea leads to the renowned tropical gardens of Inverewe at Poolewe. These gardens, influenced by the warm Gulf Stream, were initially planted by Sir Osgood MacKenzie over a century ago and are now maintained by the National Trust for Scotland.
The return journey passes by the Corrieshalloch Gorge and the Falls of Measach, offering a panoramic view of Loch Broom, enticing visitors to explore Ullapool, Achiltibuie, and the Summer Isles.
The beautiful county of Sutherland awaits exploration on another day.
