PACAYA SAMIRIA NATIONAL RESERVE
DAY 1
Pick up from the airport or hotel. Transfer to Nauta town. The journey will take approximately 2 hours by highway. This town is considered the gateway to Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
From Nauta, we will depart in our boat upstream on the Marañon River for approximately 3 hours to the community of Santo Domingo….
PACAYA SAMIRIA NATIONAL RESERVE
DAY 1
Pick up from the airport or hotel. Transfer to Nauta town. The journey will take approximately 2 hours by highway. This town is considered the gateway to Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
From Nauta, we will depart in our boat upstream on the Marañon River for approximately 3 hours to the community of Santo Domingo.
During the navigation along the Marañon River, you will have the chance to gaze upon the breathtaking landscapes and the diversity of flora and fauna, such as river dolphins, birds, and much more.
Upon arrival, we will register at the ranger station of Pacaya Samiria.
After registration, we will continue navigating for about 30 minutes to the community of Buenos Aires. On our way, we will be able to delight in wildlife along the riverbanks, including herons, large-billed terns, black-collared hawks, kingfishers, cormorants, egrets, and more.
We will enjoy a typical lunch made from local ingredients.
In the afternoon, we will take a jungle walk into the primary forest to look for wildlife. Observe different species of animals in their natural habitat, such as monkeys, birds, insects, rodents, reptiles, and amphibians.
It is time for a delicious dinner.
Walk through the ecological reserve at night. Biological activity differs greatly between night and day in the Amazonian ecosystem. Venture into the forest after dark, enhancing animal resources to create new adaptation mechanisms. Listen to nocturnal forest sounds and spot species that only emerge at night.
Overnight in the jungle.
DAY 2
Early morning expedition. We will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful natural scenery and wildlife of the riverbanks. This is the best time to spot many species of birds, primates, and sloths.
We will enjoy our breakfast with refreshing fruit juice.
Jungle walking for around 2-3 hours to explore a lake or cocha in order to search for the biodiversity, rich flora, and fauna of the primary forest. (Different species of birds, sloths, and monkeys in their natural habitat). We will do an ethnobotanical walk. We will get to see the Lupuna (Ceiba pentandra), the largest tree in the Amazon rainforest, which can exceed 50 meters. You will also see varieties of birds, insects, arachnids, reptiles, and amphibians. If we are lucky, we could also see different kinds of boas, including anacondas, and the jaguar when it comes for water near the shore of the lake.
We will enjoy our typical lunch.
We will take a boat ride to try some artisanal piranha fishing, the way locals do it. The guide will instruct you, help you, and provide you with all the equipment needed. If you are skillful, you can catch some other species of fish.
Observation of pink dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) and gray dolphins or tucuxis. Here is your chance to jump into the Pucate River and swim inside the Pacaya Samiria.
Night expedition. We will go in search of the black and white caimans along the riverbanks, nocturnal birds, rodents, and mammals that we can see during the silence of the night aboard our canoe.
Accommodation in our camping tents. Overnight in the middle of the forest.
DAY 3
We will continue exploring early in the morning with an expedition aboard our canoe to observe different species of monkeys and many other species of birds through a small creek. We will enjoy the beautiful sunrise in the jungle of mirrors.
Morning botanical walk. You will get to know different medicinal plants of the Amazon jungle. You will learn how to identify vines or lianas that contain natural water, a survival technique practiced by the indigenous people.
Pack our camping stuff and get ready to move ahead into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. We will navigate for approximately 2 hours until our next destination.
Expedition looking out for primates and other animals in their habitat. The deeper you get into the Amazon rainforest, the more chances you have to see wildlife.
Creek exploration by canoe. At the end of the creek, we will hop down from the canoe and walk the surroundings looking out for wildlife like the nine-banded armadillo (Carachupa), the giant anteater (Oso hormiguero), rodents like the paca agouti (Majaz) and the black agouti (Añuje), among others. Follow an excursion to go in search of the giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) and the neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis), where you can also see varieties of birds and reptiles.
Nocturnal expedition looking (and hearing) for nocturnal animals, including caimans, frogs, snakes, and others.
Camping in our tents. Overnight in the middle of the forest.
DAY 4
We get our stuff ready to continue navigating up ahead Yanayacu to reach a small creek. The deeper we go into the jungle, the more chances we have to see more wildlife.
Jungle walk to find and observe monkeys (like howler monkeys or woolly monkeys) and other animals. We will be on the lookout because this place is a good one for spotting macaws (red and green macaw or Ara chloroptera, blue and yellow macaw or Ara ararauna, among others). In the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, we can find 2 of the 8 species of macaws found in Peru.
Excursion to find and observe some giant river otters.
Night canoeing excursion, looking for wildlife.
Nocturnal walk looking for the nine-banded armadillo (Carachupa or Dasypus novemcinctus) and rodents like black agouti (Añuje or Dasyprocta fuliginosa) and paca agouti (Majaz).
Camping in our tents. Overnight in the middle of the forest.
DAY 5
Early morning expedition. This is our last chance to look for more wildlife along the riverbanks. This is the best time to spot many species of birds, primates, and many other species of animals.
We will enjoy a delicious breakfast.
We start our way back, stopping at Buenos Aires community to stretch our legs. You will have the opportunity to buy beautiful handicrafts made by the inhabitants with their own hands, and at the same time, your purchase will be contributing to local development.
We head back to Nauta town. Once there, we get ready to return to Iquitos. Drop off at the airport or hotel in Iquitos City.
End of program.
