A Journey Through Time: Jerash

Our journey began in the ancient city of Jerash, a place that has long been on my list of must-visit historical sites. Known as the “Pompeii of the East,” Jerash is a testament to the grandeur of Imperial Rome, and it did not disappoint. As we walked through the city, the Oval Colonnade and the temples stood as proud reminders of a bygone era. The city’s prosperity was palpable in the colonnaded main street and the lovely Oval Piazza, where one could almost hear the echoes of ancient footsteps.

Our guide, Ahmad, was a delightful companion, sharing insights and stories that brought the ruins to life. His knowledge of the site was impressive, and his passion for history was infectious. As a former university professor, I found myself deeply engaged in discussions about the architectural marvels and the historical significance of the city. Ahmad’s enthusiasm was matched only by the beauty of the site itself, making our exploration of Jerash a truly enriching experience.

The Majestic Ajloun Castle

Next, we ventured to Ajloun Castle, a fortress that stands as one of the best-preserved examples of medieval Arab military architecture. Built by Saladin’s forces in the 12th century, the castle offers a magnificent view into the Jordan Valley. As we approached, the castle’s imposing structure loomed over us, a reminder of its strategic importance in the region’s history.

Inside, the castle was a labyrinth of corridors and chambers, each with its own story to tell. Ahmad guided us through the fortress, explaining its role in the defense against the Crusaders and its significance in the broader context of Middle Eastern history. The view from the top was breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the surrounding landscape. It was easy to see why this location was chosen for such a formidable stronghold.

Discovering Umm Qais

Our final stop was Umm Qais, a site that offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty. Known for its proximity to the ruins of ancient Gadara, Umm Qais is a place where the past and present coexist harmoniously. The site is perched on a hill, providing stunning views of the Sea of Galilee and the Golan Heights.

As we explored the ruins, Ahmad shared tales of the city’s Greco-Roman past, painting a vivid picture of life in ancient times. The remnants of the city, from the amphitheater to the colonnaded streets, spoke of a rich cultural heritage that has endured through the ages. Our journey through Umm Qais was a fitting end to a day filled with historical wonders.

On our way back, Ahmad surprised us with a stop for lunch in Jerash, where we enjoyed a meal that was as delightful as the day itself. The food was a perfect blend of flavors, a testament to the region’s culinary traditions. It was a wonderful way to conclude our exploration, leaving us with memories that will linger long after our return home.
