Shimshal is the most remote region of the Hunza Valley in Upper Hunza Gojal, sharing a border with China. It encompasses the largest area within Upper Hunza, stretching from the Hunza River in the west to Baltistan in the east, with the northern Khunjerab River marking the boundary with China. Access to this valley is via the Karakorum Highway at Passu Village in Gojal, through a 53 km Jeep-accessible road that winds through a narrow gorge. This remarkable road, opened in 2003, offers a 3-hour drive from Passu. Prior to its construction, reaching Shimshal required three separate 3-day treks from Passu. The completion of this road, which took approximately 20 years, has connected the people of Shimshal with the Karakorum Highway, central Hunza, and other southern cities of Pakistan. This link road has sparked a socio-economic transformation in the Shimshal Valley.
