Wander through this vast cistern, erected under Emperor Justinian I in 532 A.D., designed to supply water to the Great Palace. It has the capacity to hold up to 80,000 cubic meters of water, transported through 20 kilometers of aqueducts from a reservoir near the Black Sea.

Descend the fifty-two stone steps to enter the cistern. The structure is encased by a 4-meter-thick firebrick wall, sealed with waterproof mortar.
