This journey takes us over the Isthmus of Corinth and traverses the Peloponnese to reach the Alfios river valley, where the remnants of ancient Olympia lie. Known for being the original site of the celebrated Olympic Games, Olympia was the largest Panhellenic Games event. Every four years, Greeks from diverse city-states would set aside their disagreements to participate. Today, the significance of Olympia is evident in the preserved ruins, including the Temple of Zeus that once housed a 13-meter golden and ivory statue of the deity, the Temple of Hera, the stadium, and the Shrine of Pelops. Significantly, the Olympia site is still used to ignite the Olympic Flame, which then journeys across the globe to reach the city hosting the Olympic Games.

Travelling over the Isthmus of Corinth, we pause at the Corinth Canal. An impressive 6.4-kilometer cut through unyielding rock, this waterway bridges the Saronic Gulf and the Corinthian Gulf. Despite its finalization in 1893, the conception of the Corinth Canal dates as far back as 602 BC!
