Highlights
  • Piazza della Vittoria - Dominated by its grand Arch at the center, Piazza della Vittoria, named to commemorate the end of World War I, is a key spot in the city center.

  • Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta di Carignano - This structure serves as both a place of worship and a testament to the power and devotion of the noble Genoese families of the Renaissance. The religious architecture here mirrors the faith and social standing of its patrons.

  • La Casa di Colombo - Some historical dates are unforgettable since school days. Perhaps the most memorable is October 12, 1492, when Christopher Columbus, the Genoese explorer, first sailed from Europe to the Americas. We will walk near his home! Ticket cost: 3€

  • Porta Soprana - The formidable Porta Soprana! Between 1155 and 1158, the Genoese collectively built the walls to protect themselves from Frederick Barbarossa’s army.

  • Piazza Raffaele De Ferrari - We have reached the heart of Genoa, the center of city life. De Ferrari Square is the main square, a gathering place, and a venue for major city events.

  • Cattedrale di San Lorenzo - Duomo di Genova - The grandeur of its black-and-white striped facade, the bell tower overlooking the historic center, and the intricate details make the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, Genoa’s main church, an architectural marvel.

  • Piazza San Matteo - Piazza San Matteo is a well-preserved example of an early medieval aristocratic settlement. With its 14th-century church and surrounding palaces featuring characteristic black and white bands, it was the power center of the Doria family, showcasing their influence in medieval Genoa.

  • Via Giuseppe Garibaldi - Its construction took about 40 years and began with what can be considered Europe’s first urban allotment plan, led by the wealthy Grimaldi family, who transformed the area into one of the most beautiful and luxurious in Europe.

  • Spianata Castelletto - Genoa’s narrow streets make it hard to get a view from above, but this Belvedere will leave you in awe!

  • Basilica di San Siro - Located near the inner coves of the Porto Vecchio, the church of San Siro has been central to Genoa’s religious life for 17 centuries.

  • Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato - The facade is impressive, but the interior is truly breathtaking: a must-see in Genoa!

  • Porto di Genova - Imagine: this port has been in use for about 2500 years! So many people and stories have passed through here. We have the amazing Aquarium, the Biosphere, an elevator that takes you 40 meters high, and much more to explore!

A wonderful way to see Genoa at your own pace - We are only in Genoa for a couple of days and used Matteo's tour to see many of the main sights. We enjoyed the detailed audio and text commentary, maps and images. It's a fairly strenuous walk (or it was in August heat), but really well worth it! He was also available on WhatsApp if we needed any further advice. Incredibly cheap, and highly recommended.
