Highlights
  • I Trulli di Alberobello - World Heritage Site - Alberobello was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996 because it is an exceptional example of building construction using prehistoric techniques that have survived intact and still function in the modern world.

A “Trullo” is in effect a small limestone house, made of dry stone walls, roughly worked limestone boulders collected from nearby fields and topped with a conical roof.
Souvenir shops, B&Bs, bars and restaurants will cheer up your stay in Alberobello.

  • Centro Storico Locorotondo - Locorotondo: This is in its own right one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and has been awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club for the harmony of its forms and the usability of its historic centre. In particular, you will certainly be fascinated by the splendid white huts, the narrow streets paved with local stone paving (the “chianche”) and the elegant portals. But not only that: another peculiarity of Locorotondo are the houses with a regular geometric shape and a sloping roof, the latter formed by two pitches made of limestone slabs, the “cummerse”. These houses are now renovated and offered to visitors in the form of widespread hotels.
  • Centro Storico di Polignano a Mare - Polignano: Birthplace of the singer Domenico Modugno, who became famous with his “Nel blu dipinto di blu”, Polignano fascinates with the historic center rich in Arab, Byzantine, Spanish and Norman traces, such as the remains of the four defense towers that surrounded the ancient part of the town. A crystalline sea and the rock embroidered with impressive cavities, dug by the sea, are the distinctive signs of Polignano a Mare, known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”, just over 30 km from Bari.
  • Centro Storico di Monopoli - Monopoli: Known as the city of a hundred districts that recall the names of the now disappeared farmhouses, it preserves the high-medieval structure of its fortified historic centre. Each district is characterized by the presence of fortified farms, neoclassical patrician villas, churches and trulli.
