Additional Information

Constructed in 1792 in a neoclassical design after a public competition won by Canova’s associate Giannantonio Selva, Teatro La Fenice initially served as one of several private venues for performances and operas. In December 1836, a significant fire ravaged its interior, but it was reconstructed within a year, mirroring the legendary bird that rises from its ashes. Throughout the 19th century, La Fenice was the stage for the world premieres of numerous operas, including Rossini’s Tancredi, Sigismondo, and Semiramide, Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Beatrice di Tenda, Donizetti’s Belisario, Pia de’ Tolomei, and Maria de Rudenz, as well as Verdi’s Ernani, Attila, Rigoletto, La traviata, and Simon Boccanegra.

With a seating capacity exceeding a thousand, La Fenice is renowned for its superb acoustics, which were further improved after its reconstruction following another devastating fire in 1996. It features a 98-member orchestra and a 66-member chorus, attracting enthusiastic local audiences and a significant international following.
