Izmir Agora Ancient City, Pergamum Acropolis and Asklepion
Izmir - Upon your arrival at Izmir Airport, we will meet and proceed to Smyrna, the Suffering Church (Revelation 2:8-11), to visit St. Polycarp Church, the first church of Asia Minor. Next, enjoy a panoramic drive to Mont Pagus, also known as “Kadifekale,” the castle of Alexander the Great. Continue to Pergamum, the Compromising Church (Revelation 2:12-17), where you will see the “Red Court” basilica and the Acropolis. The people of Pergamum were drawn to the grandeur of the pagan temples and struggled to remain as faithful as Antipas, who was martyred here. The city was referred to as “Satan’s Throne,” especially after the construction of the Zeus Altar, made entirely of white marble. At the end of the tour, transfer to a hotel in Kusadasi.
Thyatira, Sardis and Philadelphia Ancient Sites and Churches
Ancient Church of Laodicea, Pamukkale Hot Springs and Hierapolis Ancient City
Denizli - On the third day, we will pick you up from the hotel and drive to Laodicea, the Lukewarm Church (Revelation 3:14-22). Recently uncovered, Laodicea offers a comprehensive view of the entire city, including its streets, massive stadium, theater, marketplaces, baths, temples, fountains, and latrines. After being impressed by the extensive ruins, we head to Hierapolis, known as the “Golden City” due to the color of its local travertine stone. Home to Anatolia’s largest cemetery with 2000 sarcophagi, Hierapolis also features the best-preserved stage building of a Greco-Roman theater with beautiful friezes. After exploring the ruins, we visit the Pamukkale hot springs, formed by thermal water containing calcium bicarbonate. At the end of the day, transfer to your hotel.
Ancient City of Ephesus, Basilica of St. John, Ephesus Museum, Temple of Artemis
Ancient City of Ephesus - On the fourth day, visit Ephesus, the Loveless Church (Revelation 2:1-7), the world’s largest open-air museum. Once a bustling maritime city with a population of 250,000, Ephesus was one of the first cities to illuminate its marble streets and agoras (markets). Ephesus was part of St. Paul’s missionary journey. During his last visit, he saw people worshipping golden or silver idols of Artemis, their main Pagan Goddess, known as Diana by the Romans. He warned them against idol worship. Led by Demetrius, the people rioted against St. Paul at the Ephesus Theater, fearing his teachings threatened their business. This is the Church that lost its devotion to Jesus Christ: “Nevertheless, I have this against you, that you have left your first love.” “…repent…” (Revelation 2:5)
Miletus and Priene Ancient Cities, Apollon Temple of Didyma
Temple of Apollo - Once a large metropolis, Miletus is now mostly filled with rainwater and partly marshland from the River Meander, which silted the city’s harbor over the ages. This is where St. Paul bid farewell to the church at Ephesus after the riot. Next, visit Priene, the best-preserved Greek city, known for its tranquility. The Temple of Apollo at Didyma, the oldest oracle center in Anatolia, will be a highlight with its two standing original columns. The village of Doganbey, where old Greeks once lived, will enchant you with its natural beauty and peace.

Anatolia, a land where the sun greets the earth before elsewhere, is also the cradle where Christianity took root and expanded. Paul, an Antioch native, communicated with the earliest Christian communities in Asia Minor through letters. These interactions led to the mass conversion of individuals who bore witness to the holy wonders performed by the saints in this region. The seven Ecumenical Councils convened in various Anatolian cities, where the Church Fathers made vital decisions. A notable decision took place during the 3rd Council held in Ephesus, where it was decreed that Virgin Mary would be referred as “Theotokos”, or Mother of God. This historical, cultural, and Biblical journey provides insights into the era, aiding in a better understanding of the Biblical times while we explore the scripture.
