  • Pergamon Theatre - Located 100 km to the north of Izmir, Pergamon is a city of great renown, once described by the Roman historian Pliny as “the most illustrious city in all of Asia.” Its significance stems from its status as a capital for nearly four centuries by the time John penned his epistle. Pergamon’s history is rich, with layers of civilization from the Stone and Bronze Ages to the Archaic and Classical Periods. The city’s architectural marvels, including temples, palaces, and marketplaces, were predominantly constructed in the 4th and 3rd centuries B.C. in Anatolia. Among these, the grand Zeus Altar and the Parchment Library are particularly notable. The library was famed for its extensive collection of texts inscribed on specially treated lamb and goat hides, a method developed in Pergamon in response to an embargo on Egyptian papyrus by the Ptolemaic rulers of Egypt.

  • The Asklepion - The period also saw the erection of other splendid structures like the Temple of Athena and the sanctuaries dedicated to Demeter and Dionysus. Post-lunch, the tour will proceed to the Asclepion, a sanctuary named after the Pergamene deity of healing, “The Pergamum God of Health.” In antiquity, this region was known for three major religious sanctuaries: the Artemis temple in Ephesus, the Apollo shrine in Delphi, and the Asclepius sanctuary in Pergamum. The latter, dedicated to the god of health and medicine, served as a significant medical hub for centuries. It is the birthplace and workplace of renowned medical figures such as Hippocrates and Galen.
