Chand Baori is among the deepest and most expansive stepwells in India. This Baori includes three sets of staircases descending into the ground with an underground palace on one flank. These staircases and the palace are arranged in a quadrilateral configuration, with the well situated at the base. The staircases span thirteen levels underground. The palace at the Baori’s base was used by royalty as a respite from the scorching summer heat. Encircling the Baori is a vast courtyard, offering exceptional views of the Baori. Surrounding the courtyard are shaded sections where intricately carved sandstone sculptures and idols, some dating back to the 10th century, are housed.
