• Merdeka Square - Begin your day with a pick-up from your hotel or accommodation in Jakarta. Your first stop is Merdeka Square, a central landmark of Jakarta City.
• National Monument (MONAS) - Take the lift to the top of the Monument and explore the museum inside. The National Monument, standing at 132 meters (433 feet), is located in the heart of Merdeka Square, Central Jakarta. It serves as Indonesia’s national monument, commemorating the struggle for independence. The monument is topped with a flame covered in gold leaf, symbolizing the enduring spirit of the Indonesian people’s struggle. Descend to the large diorama, a spacious national history museum measuring 80 x 80 meters, which can accommodate around 500 visitors. The museum features dioramas depicting ancient human history, various Indonesian kingdoms, and the New Order era, offering a timeline of Indonesia’s history.
• Istiqlal Mosque - Visit the mosque, take pictures outside, and join a tour to explore the interior. As you enter, you will be provided with appropriate clothing and asked to remove your shoes in accordance with regulations. Known as the Independence Mosque, Istiqlal is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the 9th largest in the world by capacity. After the visit, cross the street to see the old church.
• Jakarta Cathedral - Upon arrival at the Cathedral, take some photos outside and visit the interior. Located almost opposite the mosque, the Cathedral symbolizes peace and religious tolerance. This neo-gothic church, consecrated in 1901, predates the mosque and has a history dating back to the Dutch era. Proceed to Chinatown.
• Glodok Chinatown - Explore the historic Chinatown, home to an old pagoda built in 1650. Jakarta’s Chinatown is one of the busiest and most fascinating, being the largest in the country. Visit the bustling market and its temple, dedicated to Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism. Your guide will share stories about the area. Then, meet your driver to head to the nearby old town.
• Jakarta Old Town - Arrive at Old Town Batavia and see the Big Canal. Your guide will explain the history of Batavia, now known as “Kota Tua,” a reminder of Indonesia’s centuries-long history under European dominance. The area features many European and Chinese-style buildings from the 17th century, including the old town hall. Proceed to the Puppet or Wayang Studio.
• Makutharama Puppet Studio - Still within the Old Town area, many colonial-era buildings have been repurposed as museums, studios, and cafes. One such building houses the puppet studio, where you can see how puppets are made and enjoy a 9-minute show if time permits. It’s also a great place to pick up souvenirs.
• Kota Intan Bridge - On the way to the harbor, pass by Kota Intan Bridge. Originally called Engelse Brug or “English Bridge” due to a British stronghold nearby, the bridge was damaged during the 1628-1629 attacks by Banten and Mataram troops. Rebuilt in 1630, it was renamed “Chicken Market Bridge” or Hoenderpasarbrug, after the chicken market located across it.
• Sunda Kelapa Harbour - Arrive at the historic Sunda Kelapa Harbour, not far from the old town. This harbor, dating back to the 15th century, was a major trading and melting pot for Asian ethnic groups before European colonization. It remains active today, with traditional Phinisi boats used for logistics trading. This marks the end of the tour, with a 45-minute to 1-hour drive back to your hotel.
