There are about 6000 red colobus monkeys residing in Jozani Forest.
Jozani Forest has several habitats including swamp forest, evergreen thickets, mangroves, as well as a variety of wildlife, including sykes and red colobus monkeys, bush pigs, Ader’s duiker and suni antelopes, elephant shrews, chameleons and lots of birdlife.

Additional Information

The Jozani Forest, situated in the east-central region of Zanzibar Island, is the exclusive habitat of the rare Red Colobus Monkey, which exists only in Zanzibar. Unlike their prevalent and adaptable kin, the Black and White Colobus, the Red Colobus are an equatorial forest species now found in very limited areas of tropical forest throughout Africa. Thus, spotting them in Zanzibar is indeed a unique privilege.

The preserve further hosts a vast mangrove swamp and a segment of native forest that is the dwelling place of several distinctive species including the Sykes monkey, bush babies, duikers, hyraxes, and over 50 varieties of butterfly and 40 species of birds.

Nice nature walk - Nice walk through the Jozani forest with the red colobus monkeys and also blue monkeys, squirrels, birds, and so on. Then a walk through the mangroves. A guide from the national park gives good explanations. You can book this with anyone. Nice half day excursion.

What a place outstanding - Get a taxi or hire a car and take yourself to Jozani, go to reception and pay you will then be allocated a guide. What a fantastic experience, loads of red colobus monkeys. The treesand mangroves are stunning. The guides tell you all about the eco system and how they are trying to educate regarding the environment and how we can enhance and protect. The best trip we went to in Zanzibar, wear trainers these are not man made paths
