Setting Sail on the Athabasca

The allure of Jasper’s Athabasca River had been calling to me for quite some time. As a marine biologist, my work often takes me to the ocean’s depths, but the idea of navigating the river’s rapids was an exhilarating prospect. Arriving in Jasper, the crisp mountain air and the promise of adventure set the perfect stage for my upcoming white-water rafting experience. On the day of the adventure, the weather played its part in the drama. The morning was shrouded in mist and rain, but as if on cue, the clouds parted just in time for our 1 pm departure. Our group was a lively mix, including a couple from New York City and our guides, Emily and Jonas, whose enthusiasm was infectious.
