Conquering the Julian Alps: A Ski Touring Adventure in Triglav National Park
Drawn by the allure of the Julian Alps, I embarked on a ski touring adventure through Triglav National Park. The promise of breathtaking views and adrenaline-fueled skiing was too tempting to resist.
The Call of the Julian Alps
As a former professional athlete, I’ve chased adrenaline across the globe, but the allure of the Julian Alps in Slovenia was something I couldn’t resist. The promise of an unforgettable ski touring traverse through the snowy embrace of Triglav National Park was too tempting to pass up. My fiancée and I packed our gear, eager to experience the thrill of skiing through one of Europe’s most stunning landscapes.
Our adventure began with a drive to Bohinj Lake, where we took a cable car up to the Vogel ski resort. The ascent was breathtaking, with the Julian Alps unfolding before us, their peaks dusted with fresh snow. The first day was a whirlwind of natural beauty, as we skied from Vogel to the Dom na Komni mountain hut. The route was challenging, but the views of Triglav and the surrounding peaks made every moment worthwhile. Our guide, Grega, was a powerhouse of energy, ensuring our safety while keeping the excitement levels high.
A Journey Through the Seven Lake Valley
The second day of our tour was nothing short of magical. We set off from the mountain hut, skis strapped on, ready to tackle the snowy expanse of the Seven Lake Valley. The valley, blanketed in snow, was a sight to behold, with the lakes hidden beneath a thick layer of ice. The journey was long and demanding, but the scenery was so captivating that fatigue was a distant thought.
As we reached the bivouac at Prehodavci, the exhaustion of the day began to set in. But Grega, ever the consummate host, prepared a two-course dinner that revived our spirits. The camaraderie of the group, coupled with the stunning views, made for an unforgettable evening. Although we couldn’t summit Triglav due to conditions, the attempt itself was exhilarating. A second guide, Igor, joined us for this leg of the journey, bringing an added layer of professionalism and safety.
The Descent into Krma Valley
Our final day was a thrilling descent into the Krma Valley. We began with an ascent to Kanjavec, the highest point of our tour, before skiing down into the Velo pelje valley. The descent was long and exhilarating, with over 800 vertical meters of skiing. The Julian Alps provided a stunning backdrop, their peaks standing tall against the clear blue sky.
As we made our way to the Krma Valley, the sense of accomplishment was palpable. The tour had been challenging, but the rewards were immense. The combination of breathtaking scenery, expert guidance, and the thrill of skiing through such a majestic landscape made this an adventure to remember. For those seeking a safe yet adrenaline-fueled experience, the Ski Touring Traverse is a must-do. I left Slovenia with a heart full of memories and a promise to return for more.
