The Leshan Giant Buddha was carved from a cliff face overlooking the confluence of the Minjiang, Daduhe, and Qingyi Rivers. Constructed during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) by a monk named Hai Tong, it was intended to calm the turbulent waters and protect travelers.
Standing at an impressive height of 71 meters (233 feet), it is the largest carved stone Buddha in the world. Its shoulders span 28 meters (92 feet), and its smallest toenail is large enough to seat a person.
