Southern Ethiopia boasts a rich tapestry of ethnic origins and is the site where the earliest examples of primitive humans were discovered. While human migration eventually populated the entire globe, the original tribes of these valleys have remained. The region is home to a vibrant linguistic heritage, with 45 languages spoken by tribes such as the Borena and Mursi, as well as the smaller Karo and Dassanech (or Galeb) tribes. The area is known for its intriguing cultural practices, including distinctive home-building techniques. The Sidama, Gurage, and Dorze tribes construct their homes using bamboo in a beehive-like style, resulting in durable structures well-suited to the environment.
Residing along the Lower Omo River, the Karo tribe is celebrated for its rich cultural rituals, with members recognized for their chalk-painted bodies and stunning head-dresses.
