Yumen Pass was a crucial strategic point on the ancient Silk Road, safeguarding Dunhuang from western invasions around two thousand years ago.
Following the tour guide, guests will take the attraction’s battery bus to explore the area. They will marvel at the ancient ruins of Hecang City, the Han Dynasty Great Wall Ruins, and Yumen Pass.
The current Yumen Pass is a square fortress amidst the sandy rocks of the Gobi. Climbing the tower offers a panoramic view of scattered marshes, intersecting ravines, the winding Great Wall, and tall poplars, creating a nostalgic atmosphere.
- Great Wall of Han Dynasty - Guests will continue to explore the Han Dynasty Great Wall ruins.
With a history spanning over 2000 years, the Han Dynasty Great Wall was constructed between 101 and 121 BC. Extending over a thousand kilometers in ancient China’s western lands, it played a vital role in defending against northern invaders and significantly contributed to the Silk Road’s prosperity. The security it provided allowed merchants from both east and west to trade and exchange goods and information. Built using local materials like branches, reeds, and sand gravel, rather than masonry, the Han Great Wall in Dunhuang has lost its original style due to millennia of weathering. However, visitors can still discern its outline and appreciate the ancient people’s ingenuity.
- Yadan National Geological Park - The tour continues to Yadan National Geological Park, also known as Yadan Devil City for its desolate desert and eerie sounds, showcasing an impressive Yardang landform. For those interested in natural landscapes or seeking adventure, this is a must-see.
As the largest Yardang Landform discovered so far, the strong desert winds create sounds reminiscent of a devil’s scream. Accompanied by the tour guide, guests will take the battery bus to explore four main sites in the park. They will have free time to enjoy the stunning views and capture beautiful photos. Visitors can observe uniquely-shaped rocks resembling Mongolian Bao, Stone Bird, Peacock, and more. With a bit of imagination, some rocks may resemble famous structures like the Potala Palace in Tibet or the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.
After the tour concludes, guests will be transported back to their hotel in Dunhuang.
