Highlights
  • Nelson Mandela Bridge - While visiting the Nelson Mandela Bridge, you can explore the surrounding areas. The CBD offers a range of cultural and historical sites, including the Constitution Hill, a former prison turned human rights museum, and the Market Theatre, a renowned performing arts venue. Braamfontein, on the other hand, is known for its trendy cafes, art galleries, and the Neighbour goods Market, a vibrant food and craft market.

Visiting the Nelson Mandela Bridge is not only a chance to admire its architectural brilliance but also an opportunity to connect with South Africa’s past and witness its journey towards a more inclusive future. So, be sure to include this iconic bridge in your itinerary when exploring Johannesburg.

  • Apartheid Museum - The apartheid system was a legalized form of racial segregation enforced by the National Party government. It involved the strict separation of different racial groups, primarily between the white minority and the non-white majority. Apartheid laws had profound effects on all aspects of South African society, including education, employment, housing, and political rights.
  • Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial - The Hector Pieterson Museum was established to commemorate the Soweto Uprising and honor the memory of Hector Pieterson. It was opened on June 16, 2002, to coincide with the 26th anniversary of the uprising. The museum is located near the spot where Hector Pieterson was fatally shot.
  • Mandela House - It’s worth noting that there are several other locations associated with Nelson Mandela that hold historical significance, such as the former prison on Robben Island, where he spent 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment, and the Nelson Mandela Museum in Qunu, his childhood home, which showcases his life and achievements.
  • Vilakazi Street - Vilakazi Street stands as a testament to the struggles and achievements of Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and the people of South Africa, and it continues to be an important site for preserving their legacies.

Excellent tour in Johannesburg! - Thabang was an excellent guide for the day in Johannesburg. He is very knowledgable about the area and the history of the city and surrounding areas. He took his time to tell us many stories about the area and is well-known by locals. I recommend his services if you are looking to learn about and see the area!
