• Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct - Constitution Hill is a living museum that narrates South Africa’s journey towards democracy. It is located on the site of a former prison and military fort, bearing witness to the country’s tumultuous past. The prison museum tour offers a captivating look into South Africa’s history, including the infamous Old Fort Prison complex, known as NUMBER FOUR, where countless ordinary criminals and political prisoners, such as the late President Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Joe Slovo, Albertina Sisulu, Winnie Mandela, and Fatima Meer, were harshly punished before the advent of democracy. You will also have the chance to stand inside the highest court in the land, the Constitutional Court, and learn about our Constitution.

• Baragwanath - The tour continues as we drive over the multimillion-rand Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg on our way to Soweto. We enter Soweto through Diepkloof Extension, where you will learn about the history and demographics of the area. We pass by Baragwanath Hospital, the largest hospital in Southern Africa and the third largest in the world, covering an area of 7 hectares (170 acres). It serves as a teaching hospital for the University of the Witwatersrand and all provincial hospitals in Johannesburg.

• Orlando Towers - The Orlando Towers are one of the most recognizable landmarks in Soweto. Originally cooling towers for a coal-powered station that supplied electricity to Johannesburg for over 50 years, the station was closed in 1998 and the towers were transformed into an entertainment and sports center in 2008. The towers are always adorned with bright colors as they are used by companies to advertise their products.

• Vilakazi Street - Vilakazi Street is a popular attraction with significant historical importance. It is the only street in the world where two Nobel Prize winners once lived. The homes of the late President Mandela and the late Archbishop Emeritus Tutu are located on this street. You will have time to explore the flea market selling clothes, artifacts, and curios. Sakhumzi Restaurant, located near Mandela House, offers a South African cuisine buffet lunch featuring dishes like dumplings, rice, pap, samp, and tripe, as well as beef stew, sausages, chicken, vegetables, salads, and desserts. Light lunch options are also available. Lunch is optional.

• Mandela House - Mandela House on Vilakazi Street in Soweto was built in 1945 by the Johannesburg City Council. Nelson Mandela lived in this house before his imprisonment. The house provides a meaningful experience for visitors, sharing the story of Nelson Mandela in the context of his life, and promoting human rights, democracy, reconciliation, mutual respect, and tolerance among the people of South Africa. You will have the opportunity to view the former home of this great statesman.

The tour concludes on Vilakazi Street, where Mandela House is located. We allow time for a tour of Mandela House and browsing the flea markets.
