Managed by Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA), it serves as the home ground for Kaizer Chiefs F.C. in the South African Premier Soccer League and hosts significant matches for the South African national football team. It is adjacent to the South African Football Association headquarters (SAFA House), which housed both the FIFA offices and the Local Organising Committee for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Built as the primary football stadium for the World Cup, FNB Stadium became Africa’s largest stadium with a capacity of 94,736. The stadium is nicknamed “The Calabash” due to its resemblance to the African pot or gourd.

The police opened fire on black students protesting the enforcement of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction, preferring to learn in their native languages, Xhosa and Zulu. A news photograph by Sam Nzima of the dying Pieterson being carried by another Soweto resident, with his sister running beside them, was published worldwide. His death anniversary is commemorated as Youth Day in South Africa.
