A Journey into the Wild

As a wildlife photographer with a deep-seated love for Africa, I am always on the lookout for new adventures that allow me to capture the continent’s magnificent creatures while promoting sustainable travel. This year, my journey took me to the Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, a gem nestled in the Cradle of Humankind heritage area, just a short drive from Johannesburg. The allure of witnessing the Big 5 and more than 30 species of game in their natural habitat was irresistible.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by our knowledgeable guides, Gregory and Stephen, from Stephenson Adventures. Their passion for wildlife and conservation was evident from the start, as they shared fascinating insights into South Africa’s history and the current state of its wildlife. As we drove through the reserve, the anticipation of spotting lions, rhinos, and buffaloes was palpable. Up Close and Personal

Here, we witnessed the feeding of these magnificent creatures, an experience that left me in awe of their power and grace. The Reptile Center was another fascinating stop, offering a glimpse into the diverse world of reptiles that call this reserve home.

At the Neck & Deck restaurant, I had the chance to feed a giraffe, an experience that brought me closer to these gentle giants. The joy of seeing the excitement on the faces of fellow travelers, especially the children, was a reminder of the importance of fostering a love for wildlife in future generations.
