Situated on the eastern side of the Jordan River, 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) north of the Dead Sea and 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) southeast of Jericho, this site covers an area of 533.7 hectares (5.337 km²; 1,319 acres) and features two distinct areas: Tell al-Kharrar, also known as Jabal Mar Elias (Elijah’s Hill), and the Zor area near the river (2 km (1.2 miles) to the west), where the ancient Church of Saint John the Baptist is located.
This location is near the historic route between Jerusalem and Transjordan, passing through Jericho, across a Jordan River ford, and linking to other biblical sites such as Madaba, Mount Nebo, and the King’s Highway.
Historically, the term Al-Maghtas has referred to the area spanning both banks of the river. The western section, also known as Qasr el-Yahud, has been included in the UNESCO proposal, but has not yet been designated as a World Heritage Site.
