Highlights

Sengan-en - Senganen Garden (仙巌園), also known as Isoteien (磯庭園), is a Japanese style landscape garden along the coast north of downtown Kagoshima. One of the garden’s most striking features is its use of Sakurajima and Kagoshima Bay as borrowed scenery. The garden also includes small ponds, streams, shrines and a bamboo grove.

Senganen was constructed in 1658 by the wealthy Shimazu Clan, one of the most powerful feudal clans during the Edo Period (1603-1867). The Shimazu ruled the Satsuma domain (present day Kagoshima) for almost 700 years until the end of the feudal age in 1868. They continued to be influential into the modern era as some of the earliest adopters of Western science and technology.

Amazing Time - Kiyoko was an incredible tour guide. She picked us up at the port and then took as to take the ferry to Sakurajima Volcano. It was breath taking. After ferrying back to mainland we stopped by a local market to grab some snacks. We then headed to Sengan-en (Japanese Gardens). It was amazing to learn that they used cats in battle to tell time of day with. "Round at six, like an egg at eight and four, like a persimmon seed at ten and two, and a needle at midday." Really really cool place. I wish we had more time to explore it.

Great tour - Mikiko was a fantastic guide! She reached out to us early to ask what we wanted to and created a great itinerary for us. She set out expectations regarding cab fare vs bus fare so there were no surprises. She went above and beyond to make sure our day was memorable. I highly recommend this tour!

Outstanding - OMG, what can I say. Kiyoko-San was an incredible tour guide full of history and knowledge of the area. She took us to every stop we asked for including both sides of Mount Sakurajima. She also had us taste local candies. She took us to local art shops so we can see what they make in Kagoshima. The Japanese gardens…. Just incredible. We were picked up at the cruise port early and returned at the appointed time with enough time to shop at the port before getting back on the ship. And so much more to see next time when we come back for longer than a cruise stop.

Excellent Guide and Interesting Itinerary - We greatly enjoyed our tour. Our guide was fantastic with her communication, planning, and execution of our tour. She met us at our port in Yokohama, purchased for us our train tickets, and guided us through fantastic sites in Kamakura. I highly recommend this guide and tour.

Fantastic guided tour around Sakurajima - Had a great round-trip around Sakurajima with our guide Kiyoko. She was very engaged in making sure our tourwas the best we could want, as she was very attentative to our wishes and very knowledgeable about the island and it's history. She also hired a local Sakurajima taxi for the duration of the tour (which is an extra cost that we agreed to), which greatly surpassed our expectations with his local insights and secret spots! Would definitely recommend taking such tour if you are interested in Sakurajima and want to have some extra anecdotes and finding spots that you might miss on your own!

Best tour to Kagoshima - This travel to Kagoshima was so especial for me as my grandparents on the side of my mother are Japanese and from Kagoshima. Kiyoko-san was an excellent guide, from the beginning she asked me what options I would prefer and adapted the tour to my preferences. The knowledge, experience and kindness were the most representative from Kiyoko-san and she made me feel very comfortable and covered all my expectations on this tour. I definitively recommend this tour who everyone who wants to visit Kagoshima and understand the culture, food and history as a local. Thanks so much for this excellent tour and congratulations to Kiyoko-san, an excellent tour guide!!!
