An Amazing Amphitheater - El Jem is amazing! What an incredible amphitheater - just as impressive as the one in Rome! And our guide Boukka did such a wonderful job showing it to us - he is so knowledgeable and friendly. We loved it!

Kairouan el Jem private tour - December 2022
The impressive austere mosque of Kairouan and the equally impressive Roman theatre at El Jem were well worth the long drive from Sousse. We took a private tour booked through Trip advisor. The guide, Nouridine Bukhari, was very knowledgeable, pleasant and a good driver. My husband has a wheelchair, Nouriddine was very helpful and pushed it for us as well. Luckily I had packed some snacks, we didn’t stop for a meal break., I suppose we could have asked but because I spend a long time taking pictures (being able to do this is one of the best things about a private tour) we didn’t have the time for a long lunch break, we did stop for toilet breaks ofcourse! There was lot to see in Kairouan. We went to the tomb complex of Sidi Sahab Balaoui who died in the 8 th c but complex was built in ottoman times( Mosque of the barber) and the Aghlabid water cisterns, hydraulic masterpieces of the medieval Arab world. I was surprised how quiet and tourist-free the tourist sites we visited were. The weather was gorgeous too!

Great tour! - Excellent tour! It’s a very relaxed, but a long day. You will spend a lot of time in the car and not much time at each destination, but it is worth it to see the Colosseum and Mosque. For the mosque: Ladies be sure to bring something to cover your arms, midsection, shoulders, and knees. Men should wear pants.
They will also provide coverings for men and women

Great guide - Noureddine Boukari was an excellent guide. He was extremely knowledgeable and did a great job making sure I was comfortable and well informed of everything we were doing. He was also very flexible if I wanted to stay longer at a place, and made sure I was able to see everything I wanted, even if the tour took longer.

Nourri’s experience made the difference! - Our guide, Nourri, was fantastic. We were picked up at our hotel and he reviewed the itinerary for the day to make sure it met our expectations before we left. Nouri was extremely knowledgeable, like a history professor, and helped us to appreciate the rise of the Phoenicians prior to Rome’s rule.
We started in Kairoouoam, which included a stop at a historical site and and a Mosque that included the tomb of a very important figure of the Islamic religion.
Nourri also explained how the Maribou, or village elders were honored and respected. Normally this stop would also include a visit to a rug merchant but we were not interested so we skipped that.
The last stop in El Djem, site of the third largest Colosseum, was breathtaking and well worth the 2 hour drive from Tunis. We had lunch at a little cafe overlooking the entrance to the Colosseum, which was owned by a jolly man who saved money by selling postcards so he could eventually buy his own restaurant. He was a really fun man with a bright smile.
With 23 years experience, Nouri helped us to appreciate a LOT of the history of the area which really brought the experience to life!
If the City of Tunis is a little overwhelming for you, than would highly recommend getting out into the countryside where we felt very safe and welcomed.

A terrible experience to avoid - We had a terrible time on this tour. The vehicle the guide arrived in (a beat up Ford Fiesta) was not appropriate from taking the two of us on a +2 hour drive (one way) to Kairouan. There were many moments during the drive when I felt unsafe due to the poor condition of the vehicle.
Despite multiple requests, the guide declined and delayed turning on the air conditioning, asking about our comfort or engaging at all really.
By the time we reached Kairouan we were feeling unwell due to illness from the heat and couple only visit a couple of locations before heading back to our hotel. Again, another +2 hour journey. The air conditioning although on barely worked.
It was a terrible experience that we strong recommend you avoid. Even when on location and trying to take photos the guide insisted we not take photo until he was done talking.
Avoid this tour at all costs.
