During this guided tour, you will have the chance to visit all six stunning monasteries and explore the interiors of three of them. Additionally, discover some of Meteora’s most remarkable hidden treasures, such as the ancient Chapel of Doupiani and the impressive St. George “Mandilas” cave.
You will also uncover the “other side” of Meteora, learning about why hermits chose these majestic caves a thousand years ago and how the monks accomplished the “impossible.”
If English is not your first language, there’s no need to worry! We provide free audio guides in Spanish, French, and Italian.
Finally, seize the opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views and capture stunning photos that you will treasure forever.
- Kastraki - Nestled at the base of the Holy Meteora Rocks and close to Kalambaka is Kastraki (meaning small castle in Greek). This charming village derives its name from a small Byzantine castle, whose ruins are still preserved today.
- Saint Nicholas Monastery - The Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Anapafsas is perched in the air on a small rock and is the first monastery encountered on the journey from Kastraki village to the stone forest of Holy Meteora.
- Roussanou Monastery - The Roussanou Monastery, also known as Arsani, is situated atop an impressive vertical and steep cliff of Meteora, nestled between the Monasteries of Saint Nicholas Anapafsas and Varlaam.
- Great Meteoron Monastery - The Monastery of Great Meteoron, or Transfiguration of Christ, embodies the grandeur and history of the Holy Meteora, being the oldest and most significant monastery.
- Varlaam Monastery - The Varlaam Monastery, or Monastery of All the Saints, is positioned on a commanding rock directly opposite the Great Meteoron and is the second largest monastery of Meteora.
- Holy Trinity Monastery (Agia Triada) - The Monastery of the Holy Trinity is the third oldest monastery in Meteora and is the most challenging to access, requiring visitors to traverse a downhill path and then ascend 145 steps carved into the rock. It is said that the first hermits used a rope ladder and a net to construct it, spending 70 years to transport all the necessary materials.
- Monastery of St. Stephan - The Monastery of Saint Stephen’s (Agios Stefanos) is situated just above the city of Kalambaka and is the most accessible monastery in Meteora, as there are no steps to reach the entrance, and access is easy via a small stone bridge.
