- Ruins of Nagamachi Bukeyashiki - Next, the tour leads you through the former Samurai District of Nagamachi. The streets retain their charming appearance, making visitors feel as if they’ve stepped back into Old Japan. With various shops selling local crafts, there’s an opportunity to browse for souvenirs.
- Oyama Shrine - Moving on from the Samurai District, the guide will take you through Oyama Shrine en route to Kanazawa Castle. Unlike most Japanese shrines, the entry gate here is made of brick, highlighting its unique history. You’ll also pass through a small, beautiful garden as you exit the shrine towards the castle.
- Gyokusen-an - Upon entering the castle grounds, you’ll have the chance to enjoy a Matcha tea experience while overlooking a centuries-old garden. The Gyokusen-an tea house is a stunning example of Japanese design, and their Matcha and wagashi sweets are sure to please. (Occasionally, events at this tea house may lead us to an alternative location for matcha and sweets.)
Afterwards, there will be time for lunch!
- Kanazawa Castle - On the way to Kenroku-en Garden, the tour will guide you through Kanazawa Castle grounds. Admire the grandeur of the restored buildings that majestically overlook the expansive lawn, while your guide shares insights into the Samurai history of Kanazawa and the origins of its wealth and success.
- Kenrokuen Garden - After passing through the castle, you’ll enter this stunning display of traditional Japanese design concepts. Stroll through the gardens, enjoy city views, and perhaps visit the home of the former Lord of Kanazawa’s wife.
- Higashi Chaya District - Experience the traditional tea district and Geisha culture at Higashi Chaya. The streets, lined with elegant tea houses from centuries past, are filled with eateries and craft shops. After a guided walk, you’ll have free time to explore the streets, perhaps enjoying ice cream or takoyaki topped with gold leaf.
- Ochaya Shima - The tour continues inside a tea house, or Chaya, once inhabited by Geisha and visited by their affluent patrons. The vibrant walls and musical instruments here reflect the wealth and enchanting atmosphere of Kanazawa’s tea districts during its golden era. Your guide will gladly answer any questions about Geisha.
- Kazuemachi Chayagai - Departing Higashi Chaya, the tour passes by the Kazuemachi tea district on the way back to the station. Less crowded than Higashi Chaya, this tea district still hosts Geisha performances, and if you’re fortunate, you might hear the gentle sound of a shamisen being played from one of the quaint sidestreets.
