- Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - Visit the Temple of the Tooth, also known as “Sri Dalada Maligawa,” located in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. This temple, part of the royal palace complex, houses the only surviving relic of Buddha, which is highly venerated by Buddhists. The relic has played a significant role in local politics since ancient times, as it is believed that whoever possesses it holds the governance of the country. This belief led ancient kings to go to great lengths to protect the relic. Kandy was the capital of the Sinhalese kings.
- Royal Botanical Gardens - The origins of these gardens date back to the reign of King Kirthi Sri Rajasinha (1747-1780), when it served as his royal residential compound and park. It officially became a botanical garden in 1821 under the governance of Sir Edward Barnes. Spanning over 150 acres, the garden boasts a spectacular arboretum, over 100 endemic plants, and a fantastic collection of palms, bamboo, cacti, flowers, and orchids housed in a delightful ‘orchid house.’ The Herbarium contains over 200,000 dried and preserved plant specimens collected over more than 180 years. The two main highlights of the garden are the orchid house and a stately avenue of royal palms. Another favorite attraction is the giant Javan fig tree on the great lawn, resembling a living geodesic dome.
