We set off at 06:30 and drive east past Mbale towards Mount Elgon located at the border with Kenya. The duration of the journey from Kampala to Mbale is typically 3-4 hours on a good tarmac road. Mt. Elgon, an extinct volcano with the height of 4,321m, was higher than Kilimanjaro in prehistoric times. While the mountain extends into Kenya, the highest point, Wagagai, resides in Uganda and is best reached from the Ugandan side. The slopes of Mt. Elgon serve as a significant watershed and are home to a diverse range of vegetation zones from montane forest to high open moorland marked by unique giant lobelia and groundsel plants. The breathtaking views are the primary draw for hikers on this often overlooked manageable mountain. In addition to landscape, the mountain offers a variety of forest monkeys, small antelope, as well as elephant, buffalo and other yet to be documented species.
