Additional Information

These are among the distinctive communities located to the east of Uganda, on the inclines of Mount Elgon, home to the age-old Sebei culture which encompasses their societal, economic, and governance structures. They are part of the Kalenjin group, thought to have originated from the Ethiopian Highlands, particularly the Abyssinia region. Today’s Kalenjin populations are believed to trace their ancestry back to people who migrated from the areas around the Nile River in Western Ethiopia’s highlands. One legend suggests their initial homeland was Msiri, an ancient term for Egypt. Historically, they governed themselves through a system of chiefdoms, but the influence of neighboring tribes in Uganda led them to establish a kingdom that persists to this day.
