Day trip to Karaganda and Karlag Gulag museum from Astana - I had an excellent trip to Karaganda on 10 September. Leon was a great driver and guide, speaking very good English and understanding my interests quickly. The highlight was visiting the Karlag Gulag museum, which has displayed a lot of information and items very well. Astana Horizons dealt very efficiently with my late booking: I strongly recommend them.

A Time Machine Across the Steppes - After a few days in the futuristic bubble of Astana, this tour was like taking a time machine. It starts with a 3- hour ride across the steppes surrounding the city-- not the most exciting landscape, but a great look at the terrain that underlies so much of Kazakh culture. The KarLag museum is informative and well laid-out, if a bit propagandistic. And some of the exhibits were definitely not for the faint of heart! It's stunning to realize that, at its height, the KarLag camp was once the size of Texas (seriously!), and it's impact on Kazakhstan (and the rest of the USSR) is immeasurable. For lunch, we went to an outstanding Russian restaurant in Karaganda, then toured a bit of the city. As the tour description notes, Karaganda has barely changed since the days of the USSR, so the tour offered a historical glimpse of a world that you just don't see in Astana. The tour guide and driver were generous and personable, and were happy to adjust the tour per my requests. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this tour!

Travel to the Soviet Union - Took the tour to Karaganda with Kadyrbek. He was a great guy and we enjoyed learning a lot more about Kazakhstan from him as we time-travelled back to the Soviet era. Lunch was delicious and water was provided as well. Highly recommended to take this tour if you are looking for an efficient way to visit the Soviet sites in and around Karaganda.

Also, it’s a good outing from Astana.

You don't have to go to Russia... - Why go to Russia? You can have a good idea of how it was in the USSR going to Karaganda. We saw theatres, monuments, and murals. Everything was fascinating. The explanations were clear and in perfect English. After lunch, we visited the very poignant KarLag museum which shows the life in Stalin's labor camps.
