Highlights
  • Tulamben Beach - Tulamben, situated in the northeastern part of Bali, has become a magnet for passionate divers worldwide, thanks to its stunning underwater scenery, with the USAT Liberty shipwreck being a prime diving attraction. This tranquil and secluded village lies in one of the island’s most remote areas, characterized by a dry, rugged landscape that starkly contrasts with the vibrant reefs beneath the waves. The US Army cargo ship met its demise during the 1942 battles when a Japanese submarine torpedo struck it about 19km southwest of the Lombok Strait. Efforts by US and Dutch destroyers to tow it to the old Singaraja seaport in North Bali were unsuccessful. Consequently, the ship was beached on Tulamben’s shores for salvage. A volcanic eruption of Mount Agung two decades later pushed the wreck 25m out to sea, where it now rests at a depth of 30m, becoming a haven for colorful coral colonies and tropical fish.
